It’s uh, quite interesting, you know? Knowing that you spend such a large portion of your life not living. And uh, well, I guess it depends on the life you live too, wouldn’t you say? But, to live and not to be alive? It’s an interesting concept. It reminds me about the other day I went to the park to enjoy some sunshine and while I was out, I had seen Happy staring out at a pond. A-and in that moment I got curious and joined her. Now, this was a nice pond. Not quite as nice as the one by the bench we sit at, but still a good pond. I-I'll have to take you to see it sometime. Anyway, we stare out at the pond for awhile before I ask, “What are we looking at?” Because I was looking at the pond, but I could tell she was looking for something else. “Well Mr. Hippo, I'm looking at all the cute frogs! See?” And she pointed into the pond. I-I tried looking to where she pointed, but all I could see was ice. And so I told her, “Happy, I don't see what you're looking at.” So she gets down lower and I follow. Now, this isn't easy for a hippo like myself, but I had wanted to see those cute frogs. We're both really quiet and I see her point, so I follow to where she's pointing. And Orville, you wouldn't believe it. In the pond were three frogs, all frozen in place. We continued watching them awhile before finally getting back up. Now, I'm not a herpetologist, but it was awfully cold out and winter's no place for a frog. “Happy,” I said, “Are these frogs alive?” “Why sure they are Mr. Hippo! They're just sleeping.” “How do you know they were sleeping?" I asked her. She just looked at me and with a smile told me she didn't know, then continued on as if it didn't bother her. And maybe it didn't, what was it to her if they were sleeping or not. I-I guess it didn't bother me too much either, because I went along and went back to what I was doing before too. Maybe she didn't want to think about the difference and whether or not they were sleeping or not. No one really ever wants to stop and think about the difference between dying and sleeping.
And how would you know the difference?
Well, Orville, I-I guess it’s just a matter of if you wake up.
