The Land of the Blessed SunColors: Red/Orange/Yellow, Gold Metal
Motifs: Clouds (Sky), Spiked Beams, Suns
Fashion Inspiration: Tang Dynasty China
The second largest of the three kingdoms, people of the Sun are born with their own innate magic. Each full blooded child is born with a sun crest birthmark on their back and from this mark their magic collects. Due to this they are able to cast spells without a medium such as grimoire or spells. The use of magic is deeply ingrained into their every day lives, used in all daily tasks and required to get a job within their kingdom. Those that are less skilled are usually mocked and its common to view magic skill related to rank. While the peasant class may have equal magic to those of nobles, the proper tutoring and training gives nobles an edge in the race. To further this, children born in the Inner Ring of the kingdom are generally branded with an added mark above their own sun crest.
The kingdom itself is rather vast but much of it is farmland, once you get to the inner reaches of it, towns quickly grow and develop. Each town in this part of the kingdom, called the middle ring, has its own castle and is monitored by a lord. The smallest ring, the Inner Ring, is surrounded largely by flowering gardens and fruit trees. Inside this ring is where the more noble families and their servants live. The servants themselves all children of the various lords in the Middle Ring. Only nobles are ever let past the gardens but for special festivals peasants and nobles alike are invited to parties in these gardens.
The ruling party of this kingdom is an Emperor, he acts largely omnipotent and his advisers have no say to counter any of his choices. He is said to be a man who takes all and never seems to grow tired of asserting himself. Some say his heart is as large as the kingdom itself and he loves all his people as if they were his own family. His use of enchanted swords is peerless.
The Land of the Reflecting MoonColors: Blue/Black/Grey, Silver Metal
Motifs: Stripes, Tear Drops, Crescents
Fashion Inspiration: Persia
A small city-state on the edge of Earth, the Moon Kingdom is the smallest of the three kingdoms. In part this is due to their more peaceful nature but it is also due to their lack of magic and restraints of magic use through the means they do have. Those of the moon are born without a drop of magic in their bodies and thus can only rely on others for their magic, to do this they turn to spirits and 'good neighbors' to aid them though the means of familiar contracts. Such things are heavily regulated, though. Regular people are only allowed contracts with a single spirit, and to even be considered for a second you must be of the priest class and heavily screened. To abuse magic is seen as a sin against god as it is his gift and must be used properly. Due to this they greatly frown at the other two kingdoms that use magic frivolously, but particularly have a rivalry with the Sun.
With how small their land is, the Moon does not have separate cities but instead is divided into districts. These districts alternate between farm land, housing, markets, and priest houses. The markets and housing typically is the most crowded area, streets are small and allies almost nonexistent. Their buildings are stacked high with different floors hosting different stores or different families. The Houses of God, on the other hand, are all single story with large courtyards. Each has a large perfectly circular lake, positioned so that when the moon is at it's highest, the moon will always reflect completely onto the surface of the water. Those of the Moon are monotheistic religious folk who attribute the land and all things of the earth to his creations. While they are not bitter for the lack of magic, they believe they are more "perfect" in gods eyes due to this. In their belief, those of the Sun were born first but to fiery, too wild. Those of Earth were born second, a good moderate but too hard headed and too ambitious. Lastly those of the Moon were born, and finally god decided that they were as they should. Adaptable, and consistent, those of the Moon both give and take.
Of the three, the Moon is the only oligarchy. Their decisions are made by a collective of seven priests, often represented by the moon phases (omitting new moon). These seven priests are elected from the elder priests every seven years. You may be reelected every session until your death. If a priest dies before the end of their term, a new priest is elected and acts out the rest of the deceased one's term. They must be reelected at the next election to continue in their position. Everyone in the kingdom is allowed to vote.
The Land of the Resilient EarthColors: Browns/Mahogany/Tans, Bronze Metal
Motifs: Diamonds, Stitching, Belts
Fashion Inspiration: Generic Fantasy Europe
And last, those of Earth have by far the largest population of the three kingdoms. While they have less total land than the Sun, they have far more equal distribution of land and the means to support their people. Magic in the Earth Kingdom is something that people must work to be able to use. While they are born with magic, it is much too weak to do anything with on their own. To get around this, they found ways to amplify and multiple their own resources, creating powerful and expansive uses for them. Said amplifiers are mediums but also spells and ingredients for potions, as well as specially made grimoires that each person owns. Due to all the effort that magic requires, it is by no means an every day standard like it is in the Sun kingdom. The most common people who use it are scholars and sages, of which every town has their own collective of. The scholars in particular run the various libraries, shelf upon shelf of grimoire and texts in relation to magic as well as histories and instructions. Much of these libraries are kept under lock and key, but if you appeal to the local scholar their job is to help you through them. Sages on the other hand are there to answer questions in regards to spirits and curses, they are the ones people look too if things happen that they do not understand. Similarly, sages often are the ones trained in medicinal magic as well as the best with potions and herbs.
As mentioned, the spread of the land leaves little to waste. Trails and roads between towns all weave between farm land, said land tended to communally by the villagers of all surrounded towns. These towns are separated into fiefs and each fiefdom is tasked with farming a particular set of produce so that they may rotate through them as seasons change. At the castle for these fiefdom are the largest libraries in each area. The most dangerous books of the kingdom are kept in these libraries. They are guarded by a wide array of wards and spells to prevent those without permissions access, for moreso than those other ones, these books are more than dangerous if one is not prepared to open them. The fiefdom are arranged in a six sections around the middle most section where the king is positioned. The capital of the Earth kingdom is a heavily regulated walled city, where grimoire are banned from use if one is not part of the royal guard or the king himself. The city even lacks a proper library, with only the castle armory said to hold any shelves of the magic tombs.
Like the Sun, the Earth is ruled by a King. At the top of the Top, the Kings of Earth are respected for their leadership and power more than linage or nobility. The Kings often change for it isn't uncommon for coups to toss things into array., and due to this a ruler is deemed fit by how he takes power and how well he takes to the position of king. The current king in particular took advantage of civil unrest to sway the crowds and blaze his way to the top. Upon gaining his new position, the six fiefdoms found themselves with new leaders as well. The change was gradual but stability has largely returned to the kingdom. The top librarian in each fiefdom take the second highest rank under the lords and are generally seen as the second most powerful magicians in their area due to their resources, but in most cases many skilled magicians go under the radar.
MagicPower Grimoires and Familiars
To summarize above: Sun people are fully magic and use magic on their own, Earth people have some magic but to properly use it they require a medium, Moon people finally do not have their own magic and form contracts with familiars to create 'miracles'. Magic itself in all purposes is seen as bending of the 'known'. It is a means to create something from nothing, to change the flow, and to use elements as your whim. Magicians, Magus, Spell Speakers, Sorcerers, whatever the name one might use, those who cast magic all must rely on their inner source of magic to do so. The core of magic isn't quite a resource as much as a capacity of how much 'self' a person can use when casting. When a person grows too tired, they'll become unable to convert and create the 'spark' necessary for magic. Due to this many magicians train their stamina as well as tend to eat a lot too keep up as long as possible. It is said that most families in the Sun Kingdom eat six full meals a day to burn enough calories for their magic casting. This is something that both Sun and Earth folk must deal with but in the case of Moon folk, their reliance on familiars means the magic they can do, and how much, depends completely on the spirit they take as their familiar. This can be a dangerous gamble because the contracts require gifts and trades with the spirits. Some merely want food, jewels, or servitude, while other will take lives or years from your own life span for their services. Magic itself can manifest in various ways. It can be elemental or it can create, it can reform or it can move, it can patch up or it can destroy. In all these cases, people generally find that they have an affinity for a certain type. These types are called their "Talent".
Those in the Sun Kingdom use magic most commonly for day to day things. To cook, to sew, to clean, to entertain. Their magic doesn't require any spell or incantation, and instead is controlled merely by thought. With a single thought they convert their 'self' and magic is cast, but if distracted or cut of the spell dies out. Their magic is wild and fierce, those of the Sun are unable to use grimoire or spells to channel their magic and thus are not able to use more then their potential at birth. Now, while they don't use any medium or amplifier, many of those from the Sun cast by enchanting items that slowly pick up residue magic and become more resilient and can better maintain magic without as serious thought. These items can be practically anything from fans, to bowls, to arrows, or even shoes. As long as you consistently use the same object, slowly over years the resilience will build up. On the other hand, if you try to channel too much while it is weak, then the object will likely shatter under the strain.
Earth Kingdom magic, as mentioned, uses various mediums to cast. At a young age, children who show interest are taught basic spells, as there are only a very spells that are common wide knowledge. Those who chose to focus in magic, generally must write and create their own spells by imbuing meaning into words. Saying each word with power will amplify it as well as your own and thus spells are cast. Grimoires are thus the books that store these spells, allowing for build up magic to act as an amp, further multiplying spells. Like the objects used by Sun folk, grimoires retain residual magic and over years allow for even further amplification of magic. This becomes dangerous when magicians die and their grimoires are left to the world, it is the Scholar's job to collect and store these books, for their unsupervised use could potentially burn up and kill unprepared magicians. While generally the low level books are allowed for browsing, the more powerful books one must prove worth before acquiring.
Lastly, the spirits of Moon familiars function very similar to those of the Sun kingdom. They are creatures of pure magic, varying from two inches high to larger than a human. Beings of pure energy, they only form contracts if there is something they may gain from it. They are all generally tricky folk, most love to prank and all of them shouldn't be trusted. If left to their own devices, the spirits will poke through every loop hole and cause a slew of chaos. It is due to this that contracts are regulated within the kingdom. In truth, spirits live in all three kingdoms, but it is only the moon who cannot create from their own that rely on their strength completely. The sun do not trust these spirits and prefer not to deal with them if they do not feed to, while those of the Earth can vary. The Earth folk never form contracts but sometimes spoil the spirits in exchange for favors. This is most common in the case of creating new spells or strengthening grimoires.
Wu, Anxi || 27 || Sun-Born || Degeneration || Inner Ring Noble-Born Anxi was born in the inner ring of the Sun Kingdom to a handmaiden and doctor to the king's family. As such she was branded with the mark of a noble and raised among the various nobles of the inner castle. Taking a strong interest in magic beyond the studies of a regular person, she requested special permission to travel out of the walls. To say the outside was a shock would be an understatement, dressed in her splendor she stood out like a sore thumb. And yet she still pressed on, moving from town to town in a slow spiral, absorbing history and watching the life of others. As she did, she found herself growing more and more disinterested in the life she once lived. The shine was too bright, the people blind. Stuffy. Boring. It was her home, though, so in the end once the Sun was studied, she returned home and began to write down her findings. Compiling them and sorting them into books. As that went on she soon grew bored of the same old day in and day out from before and so... she found herself requesting one last favor.. What better place to read books on magic than the Earth's libraries, after all?
Anxi's magic "Degeneration" is a cast of the destruction variety. Its a smoke like cast that breaks down and eats away at substances. The magic itself clings to the fan she carries that was a childhood gift from her mother. By fanning the smoke it spreads and seeps out further, effecting a larger range more effectively.
Zhan, Ying-Xin || 22 || Sun-Born || Bolt || Outer Ring Born Hitman/Bodyguard-For-Hire One of many, Ying was born among the vast fields of the Sun's Outer Ring. One of many it became prominent that life would be easier on his parents and grandparents if they had an added source of income. There weren't many choices and while his respected brothers chose to work as scouts and guards for the area's crops, fate seemed to have a different path for Ying. A trader and her daughter passed through town, they had returned to the Sun to pick up some goods from their source but rumors of bandits had them concerned of the road back. And it was like that young Ying found himself hired as a bodyguard on the way into Earth. As the years went on he became the regular for this job, picking up various similar tasks along the way. Finding the pay good, he come to a choice, and took the final step to leave home more permanently. During these travels he developed his magic, taking advantage of good eyes and even better aim to knock people down before they could get within range for their own attacks. It was through this that he eventually found his own partner in crime, or perhaps a rival? He wasn't sure either way.
The bolt magic that Ying uses is a creation type magic. He can create an array of 'arrow' bolts out of a sparking hot energy. These bolts are fully under his control as long as he concentrates along him to imaging a point and aim for it with considerable accuracy. Due to this he does not use an object to channel through, making his magic rather wild and unpredictable even for a Sun-Born.
XiaoLian Lockwood || 25 || Mid-Born || Storm || Middle Ring Born Traveler When two merchants meet and marry it can only be the best deal for both their businesses, XiaoLian was born into this arrangement. Due to the nature of her birth, it was challenging for Lian and her Father to prosper in the Sun and so they build their base of operations in one of the Earth's fiefdoms know for its prosperity of wealth. Even with a base of operations, Lian grew up traveling and on the road. Passing through towns, she never stayed in one place long but always eventually returned sooner or later. It is through this that she meet Lukas, his mother a regular customer of family business. What was better than magic woven silk dresses, after all? Only the most proper ladies wore them. While she learned a little magic, it wasn't until she met Lukas that she really realized her potential for it. And so travel became training time, and eventually she convinced her mother she was ready to travel with her in the Sun. And the sun was safe, but the road was rough. And thus they met Ying. The two spent time training, traveling, and eventually, getting into trouble with Lukas,
As a half blood of Sun and Earth (Mid-Born), Lian has more access to magic than the average Earth-Born. Her core is not complete, though, and as such her Sun Crest is faded and incomplete. Still, it does not rage, thus giving her access to grimoires. While there is plenty of stigma to interbreeding, there is no denying the strength of a Mid-Born, and Lian's storms are testament to that. Be it just the lightning or the whole natural disaster, with the right spell she'll get there.
Hubert Aloysius Valentine || 28 || Earth-Born || N/A || Noble Born Loaf The captain was a grand place to live, sure, but being born there left Burt in a life where everything came too easily when asked for. Whatever thing he wanted he could buy it. Never showing much interest in magic, that left Burt with the money to do anything but nothing to do. He was too high ranked for a job, and the royal guard was much too troublesome. Sure his dad had high praise for it, but all the paperwork and the magic? No way was he touching that with a ten foot pole. That left only one idea to escape his parents breathing down his neck, traveling. There was plenty to see and so he leisurely made his way, picking fights and doing whatever spontaneously entertained him the moment. Spontaneity was just how he got conned into escorting.. ah travel partnering with one little bundle of magic trouble. At the very least life wasn't so boring anymore.
Not at all willing to deal with magic or spirits or anything freaky by any means, Burt didn't even bother to learn the most basic of spells. This left him with only one choice when it came to self defense: swords. And really, he wasn't much better when it came to that front with how often he skipped training or slept through or even just straight up zoned out. Still, he had enough basic lessons to carry himself through a fight with bandits. If not he had the strength to backhand them with the sword.
Lukas Icarus Ravel || 25 || Earth-Born || Swiftblade || Middle Born Hitman-for-Hire Raised right up rubbing elbows with nobles, Lukas was born in one of the more prosperous fiefdoms. He spend much of his time poking his head into the local Library and bothering the local Scholar into training him. That along with spending time with the rift raff in unsanctioned magic games. Upon meeting Lian in his early years, Lukas introduced her to the scholar. The fellow student (though rarely there) gave him a rival and a drive leading to his development of a frightening sort of creation magic. Eventually leaving home, Lukas continued to use his magic eventually taking advantage of his spells to rake in the money via hit man hires and other back alley deals. The first time he met Ying was at one of these, challenging each other to be the first to accomplish the kill. The second time he met Ying, he was with Lian and it was then that he got the idea... to steal one of the grimoires. He knew the library and the payout could be great. They pulled it off, but the backfire left scars. If he were on his own, the book would have been tame, but the excess magic of the two with sun-blood charged the book too much, leading to discharge that struck the three of them leaving various scars. And one charred book. These marks, in a way, only proved to be a bonding secret.
Usually one of the more dangerous magics, Creation Magic can form various things and Lukas takes that a step farther in his sweet cast method. By creating swords and daggers on the fly he can strike from any angel, slash from any position, even throw them for range. After the grimoire ordeal his original book was left in cinders but after training and taming it, the new one only proved to further his speed magic.
Atticus Bartholomew Beaumont Ainsworth || 20 || Earth-Born || Gust Speak || Noble Born Scholar-in-Training Not all those born in the capital have a disinterest for magic, for at a young age, Atty found himself interested in any sort of book he could get his hands on. Within the walls this was limited, though. And so he and his sister were send to live under the care of the nearest fiefdom Scholar. They grew up surrounded by books, by magic... and often visited by one Lukas during his studies. With all the books around him, Atty found plenty of inspiration to write his own. They weren't all that special but he was young... and he had many. Note worthy for being able to recall almost any random fact he learned, Atty took up the job of a tutor to young magicians... not that he was the best, but he was well beloved. Sure there were plenty of side tracks, but it was never boring to watch how happy he seemed to be about whatever he was talking about. And he was definitely easier to talk to than the old people that ran the place. When he came of age, Atty decided to stay while his sister returned home choosing to become a royal knight. It was a tearful parting, but they wrote plenty. During the break in, it was Atty who was on the watch that night, but he was so wrapped up in his own studies that he fell asleep at his desk. With the book gone, he was sent off to go retrieve it.
Focusing largely on wind and vibrations, Atty's magic allows him to manipulate the air around him to create winds be them hot or cold. While he has yet to create powerful spells, he has such a wide breath within his talent that he can still be quite a mess to deal with. The same is to said about his grimoires. While he has five of them filled to the brim with spells, they spread use has kept them from building up much magic.
Malik Amirmoez || 20 || Moon-Born || N/A || Peasant Born Priest Lucifer || Spirit || Spine || Contract Payment is four meals a dayBorn on the fringes, Malik and his mother worked more odds and ends jobs than anything as they went along through their lives. Such jobs gave them chances to help and support those around them as well as get board and food they could share with people below them. In a way, his mom ran boarding house for travelers and anyone that needed it. They helped with the jobs and helped with the farms in exchange for a place to stay. It was this life that brought Malik to the idea of widening the influence and help he could offer, taking up all his spare time studying so that he could become a priest. The work was hard, he didn't have much free time and the tests weren't meant for one of his status, but still he wanted to help. And so he worked, he read, and he pushed forward. And eventually he was reworded, a spirit had caught his attention and after winning him over, the spirit became his familiar. With Lucifer's aid things became more smoothly and on his second try, he made it into the priesthood. In particular he worked one that was known for traveling, spreading their word and aid, even sending missionaries to the other lands.
Lucifer takes on the form of a slightly larger than normal house cat, sparking lightly with grey energy. His magic allows him to change his own shape. Turning fur into needles and spikes, he can become a guard or even send them out to needle people.
