Want to customize the photo? You can! The instructions are after the boring instructions

INSTRUCTIONS: To edit the pop-out sidebar, click the 'edit skin' link on the upper left of the journal edit page. Then, in the lower text box you'll find tags. Anything you put between them will show up in the sidebar. You can edit the two links and the message, or erase it all and put stamps, plz-emotes... anything.

There isn't any HTML you need to remember, but if you like:
  • Use two bold tags to make a heading, or three bold tags for a bigger heading with an underline.
  • Wrap your thumbs in <div class="feature">...</div> to have them formatted differently.
  • <blockquote> gets a little dotted border on the left

Changing the photo is easily done -
  • grab the template and overlap the man with your own images.
When you paste your images into the template, you don't have to be super accurate - just make sure to get it centred over the sample photos. The photo frame will crop the extra bits out for you.
  • Save the file and upload it to the net so you can link directly to it in the CSS.
You could submit it to your scraps, but make sure to get the URL of the actual image, and not just what's in the address bar when you view your deviation.
  • In the CSS, find the line beginning with .photo_ (it's near the top) and replace the URL in the background property with a link to your replacement image.
  • ???
  • ...PROFITEROLE!

  • update, 27th May '09 deviantART now replaces any links to my userpage/gallery/etc with YOUR username, which is cool, but broke the link that pointed to the stock images. I've fixed that by using an URL shortener.

update, 18th May '09 fixed the alignment in the attribution and stock footer text, fixed skin so that moods list works top and bottom, and added support for Internet Exploder - though the hover effects can't be fixed because IE sucks.

update, 6th May '09 styled the attribution footer, added background colour to the photo, so if background (man) doesn't load (when people change it) it's not transparent.

It's a pity my browser doesn't show it correctly. I didn't get to see the photo, and some of the text got messed up.

Still using Internet Exploder are you?

Tonight maybe I'll see if I can update it to support IE8

Thanks. I'm a tad phobic for non-IE browsers, even changing to IE8 was a bit annoying.

I've updated the skin, it'll look the same now in IE as other browsers - but the hover effects can't be fixed.

pnpmario In reply to foundsoundfunny [2009-05-17 08:30:46 +0000 UTC]

Well, the first moment I tried out Firefox I just stumbled around. I was too used to IE, so the entire thing was confusing for me.

foundsoundfunny In reply to pnpmario [2009-05-17 09:15:25 +0000 UTC]

At the core though, all browsers are essentially the same to use though, don't you think? Address bar, back/forward stop/refresh and home buttons - what was it that confused you?

Hopefully it doesn't sound like I'm jumping down your throat, in the usual Firefox vs. IE fashion. I've just heard the same thing from a lot of people lately. I find all browsers equally easy to use, since they're all fundamentally the same, so when people say Firefox confused them, I can't imagine what they mean by that.

But, I greatly appreciate all of you wonderful people who do take the time to make this stuff.

When you do get the motivation to dabble in it yourself, I've got a bunch of tutorials and code snippets in my journal sidebar that you might find helpful

I installed it. But is it really necessary to have the credits that says "Stock images have been used", in the footer?

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foundsoundfunny In reply to KirbySnacks [2009-05-12 19:35:30 +0000 UTC]

    Is it really that annoying?

It needs to be there to give credit to the stock providers who's images I used to make the skin. It's the small price we pay for using free stock

    It's annoying.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

foundsoundfunny In reply to KirbySnacks [2009-05-12 21:20:24 +0000 UTC]

...but why? - It's out of the way, it's not distracting from the rest of the journal, and it gives stock providers the only payment they ask for, attribution (credit.) The skin wouldn't exist without their stock. Would you ever think of not crediting Akira Toriyama in your fanart?

I don't mean to be an ass, but seriously, if you're not mature enough to deal with that, don't use the skin.

Ah wait now i got a question/some randomize "complaint"

Shouldn't there be a way to change the picture?
Like for example to a WWII soldier or a historical figure? like Winston Churchill? or Joseph Stalin? or any of that? I'm new to CSS obviously.. but I'm still asking lol.

    👍: 0 ⏩: 1

    foundsoundfunny In reply to fading-justice [2009-05-12 20:25:44 +0000 UTC]

    Indeed there is!

I actually built the skin so people can easily change the photo (see $spinegrinder 's journal: [link] )

  • download the original image and replace the photos with your own.
  • Upload your new version someplace on the web (you could post it to your scraps), and note it's URL.
  • Go to the 'options' tab in your journal edit page, and find the line beginning with .photo_ in the CSS.
  • On that line will be a background property, with a web address inside it. Replace the URL with that of your customised image.
  • ...and you're done.
  • From here, I think you can choose to save the skin for later, so you might want to do that

    foundsoundfunny In reply to the-destroyer-awaknd [2009-06-01 15:53:53 +0000 UTC]

Naw, you fail at linking to images

[link] seems to be the one you're using for the background, but it wont load for me, it looks like a broken link. Also, not sure if deviantart fixed this, but you can't use rgb(...) for colours, they can only be hex values, or names.
