"It was a gorgeous day outside, and my backyard had lots of big, old, overgrown trees that almost block out the sunlight in some corners. it was one of those days when you just felt happy for no apparent reason.

he didn't know much English. I didn't know much Japanese. we still communicated pretty well, except for that one late morning when I tried pathetically to express how the situation made me feel . . . it was like one of those scenes in a movie. individual beams of sunlight filtering through spring leaves, scattering all over the grass...
