I can easily see the attractiveness of that. Most computers however, will have to be set to check for a USB mass storage device, like you external hdd or a flash drive. Most public computers have there BIOs locked down to prevent people from tampering with the inner workings. Some new computers don't support USB boot.
The typical boot order is:
A:
B: is omited because no machine can be found with dual floppy drives or 5 1/4" fdd's either.
C:
D:
then several follow in no particular order
network boot
and any off the lower stuff from that
then USB boot.

What I see most often is C drive is first.

When it comes to the installation part...Live CDs are useful and (in my opinon) much easier than a Gentoo install.

yeah, well, obviously I can't install things to public computers.

my comp has like two har drives, a recovery one and the normal one, so the new one would be the third harddrive, the one i have to choose to install linux to, I am installing Ubuntu, adn I found a tutorial, buuuut it mentioned trouble shooting with thta method, and I don't want to damage my computer in any way, no, so I just have to be careful, very careful, VERY VERY CAREFUL, if Im doing it alooone.

pay attention to the harddrive numbers if they are the same size. (You can ignore the rp number it should be smaller than the other hdd.) (I never used a restore partition because it is useless. I use a Compaq that thinks it's a Dell because the restore partition failed on me.

yeah. yes. Mine is a Compaq too! oh, wow ... lol. okay! Mine was like sda and the other two were like hda1 and hda2, I don't remember, I wrote it somewhere so that I don't end up choosing the wrong hard drive and wiping off the memory of my computer!

weirdmindofesh In reply to FoxClaw100 [2009-07-18 01:19:02 +0000 UTC]

If I remember correctly sda1 usually refers to the CD drive. Why you can install to that I don't know.

FoxClaw100 In reply to weirdmindofesh [2009-07-18 01:39:35 +0000 UTC]

sda1 and sda2 were the oens in my comp, and I think thta sdh was the external one, soemthing like that!

I heard there were some exclusive FPS games for Linux that have very popular multiplayer! I can't wait to try them out! THANK YOU for recommending this book!

It all started with the Nokia Internet Tablet N810. Its a portable touch screen Linux computer. I did a bunch of things to it and learned a lot about Linux like I booted Debian from a 4gb SD card.

rocp In reply to FoxClaw100 [2009-06-18 00:42:00 +0000 UTC]

Lol! Anyways Maemo is the Linux distribution made just for the Tablet. You can install it on the computer as well. It runs on ARM as far as I know but I think people have emulated it or something. I don't know why the Maemo Team would make it for the X86 processor if it was made only for ARM devices. I CANNOT wait for ReactOS to be ported to ARM. Once that happens we can all run Windows programs on our Tablets and Pandoras! Mwuahahahahahahah! O umm sorry I got carried away there for a second *hope i didn't embarrass myself*. Please forgive my outburst...
