The 'fire' phoenix is a commonly recognized symbol that, to me, represents external events in life. Destructive forces that lead to re-creation, 'trial by fire'. The shadow or ice phoenix represents a more internalized process in which the events that take place may not seem so catastrophic on the outside, but leave the person drastically changed inside themselves.
