Description Hey guys!

I thought I'd share some work that I've been doing on a 3D model of a Gremlin that I am currently working on.

Here's a video of this little guy fully rigged in 3ds MAX (definitely check it out!):
youtu.be/Df--osKiI_c

He's still pretty close to being untextured (his normal maps are nowhere near done and he does not have any color/diffuse maps of yet) but he is completely rigged.

I used 3ds MAX' CAT system for his overall body and jaw rig and I created a spline based facial UI system that incorporates and blends over 60 morphs shapes/targets. The overall mesh was sculpted and modeled in a combination of 3ds MAX and Zbrush.

More very soon! Sorry for the crappy compression btw, FRAPS only renders out .avi's and those are terrible to edit in After Effects.

The model looks great from the nipples up, but below, the detail just fizzled out.

Thanks, like I explained in he description, I'm still working on his textures If it looks unfinished, it's because I haven't touched it yet

...is this for the new movie?

Which I hope to God one kid doesn't have the IQ of molded toast and actually googles what the fuck 'mogwai' means: just one guy  to go 'Oh, mogwai. let's just pump that in into the ol' iphone, here....aaaaand the search says...Mogwai, a word of cantanese origin, meaning demon...hhhhhuh.' lick his lips and then, without words grab Gizmo and cram him head first into the microwave. I mean the damn thing can talk: it's a sentient plushie with heightened spatial reasoning and oral sensitivity; it can even engineer. And nobody knows what portion of the primordial soup the little furbie crawled out of. You'd think at least one kid would sleep with an eye open. I just want one skeptic, one kid that reacts badly to Gizmo's mere existence. One Dwight Schrute in the film, that's all I'm asking for  www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aX1-V…  www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e9MYF…. That one guy that's utterly without place in society except as the towns'  resident eccentric until everything goes Mel Gibson bat shit.

Hey man, it's not for the third movie I am working on a little fan thing though.

It would definitely be hilarious to see someone have an extremely adverse reaction to Gizmo...something that, I think, we all have come to accept as synonimous with cute

Yeah, he's cute. A little too cute...obscenely so...

I'm actually in the process of doing a casting couch journal on who should inarguably be in the remake. At least for a cameo.

Awesome model, man!
Just by curiosity... it's the CAT system that allows you to rig a high-poly model? Or you use other kind of technique to be able to animate it?
I've only used the regular Skin modifier, but it is really unconfortable to work with high-poly models and I tryied a few times to use displacement map, but it's not that handy and it don't have a good preview...

And just if you don't mind... what's the poly count?

Sorry for all these questions... I'm trying to learn these awesome things but sometimes I keep "stuck" on the same issues and it hold me from going further... :/

I should also note that I am getting the surface detail solely from normal maps, not displacement maps

Thanks for the kind words!

My Gremlin is roughly 20k (in quads) so he's not exactly game-res, but he's still reasonable in terms of polycount.

When you are working with high-poly objects, you should actually never skin or rig them directly. What you need to do is create a low-poly base that you actual Skin to your rig of choice (it doesn't matter if it's custom, biped or CAT). Then you import your high poly object, and you use a "Skin Wrap" modifier to essentially skin wrap that to the low-poly proxy.

Essentially, you will be animating the low poly object, which in turn will drive the high poly object through the "Skin Wrap" modifier. There should be a lot of tutorials on this on YouTube.

I hope that makes sense

Sure makes sense, man!

I've seen something about the skin wrap modifier, but never actually tried to make it. But for sure I'll try as soon as possible...

By the way, the normal + the poly count really gives the nice look of a high-poly model, a really incredible mix!

Thanks a lot for the help, it will be really helpful!

Cheers
