I'm about to tell a personal story I don't think I've told many people before, but when a nature-related traineeship I'm doing challenged us to think of and express a moment when we felt closest to nature, this moment was the first that came to mind, and I think I'd like to tell it.

After the joy of children's parties wore off, I never particularly cared about my birthday. And yet, my 18th birthday was nevertheless a special one. Not because I had officially become an adult according to our laws and the perks that came with that. The reason was the goshawk that had come to greet me that morning. I had never seen a goshawk in person before, and yet, that morning, one was sitting in the hedge in the garden, only a couple meters from the kitchen window. They stayed there all throughout breakfast, and no matter how coincidental it might have been, it will always feel special to me. Somehow, I still feel like the bird had visited to check on me. I already loved hawks before that moment, but afterward, I really felt connected to them.
