Hm. He's not exactly adventurous; more cautious than anything else!

I had always heard that foxes made terrible pets. Something about how they're so clever, they might just decide to bite you and run away some day.

I dunno where you heard that, but that's not true at all.

While they're, on the whole, not a very good pet for the *majority* of the population, it's because of how they are and how they must be raised (not to mention the time required to do so), rather than the fact they're "too clever" and may decide to "bite you and run away".

So... they make good cuddle buddies?

No, they're not cuddle buddies either xP

I want to get a fennec fox myself (the huge ears are awesome ^^ )... but i need to get my exotic pet license first

p.s. Did/ can you have their scent glands removed or do Red foxes not smell as bad as I've been told?

FoxPMcCloud In reply to toklankitsune [2009-04-07 03:26:49 +0000 UTC]

where do you live? Depending on your state, it may not be feasible.

you can get them removed, but I didn't want the headache, cost, or chance that he may well, not recover (very unlikely on the last on there)....I personally like their smell, but, then too, I'm a fox, hehe. Seriously though, it's not that bad.

oh cool cool on the smell issue, as for the question of where I live, I'm in Florida so from what I've read about fennec foxes, which are native to Africa, I live in an ideal climate to have a fennec, but like I said, I think Florida law requires me to get an exotic pet license before I can get one, on the plus side there's supposedly a breeder that is in Tallahassee, a bit of a long drive for me but not impossible! ^^

FoxPMcCloud In reply to toklankitsune [2009-04-07 03:38:03 +0000 UTC]

fennecs are really pricey, from what I can gather....like $1000 or more, but don't quote me on that. All I know is they're a lot more expensive than red foxes.

Ohio has the absolute best laws for keeping captive born wildlife; for $25 a year I can keep as many as I want and as long as I want...I only have to put up with a yearly inspection (which never happens; game warden only showed up once, the first time I got my license).

anyway, I know next to nothing about fennecs, but could easily give you an earful on the reds, heh.

well i'd love to have a red too, but i don't know much about them pet wise and i have no idea about florida laws regarding them.... how much did yours cost?

FoxPMcCloud In reply to toklankitsune [2009-04-07 03:48:31 +0000 UTC]

uh, let's see...$200? $180? Don't remember, exactly...it was a little higher than at a exotic swap meet, but I didn't care; the breeders were top-notch and the fox had already "picked" me, so I knew he was the right one...so I didn't care that it cost extra....better to have a fox that'll like ya and has a good personality (at a cost) than one who hates your guts and is cheap.

hey compared too some dogs i've seen $180....even $200 is pretty cheap! Black Lab pups sell for around $300-$500! I'd love to get a Red fox.....if only i could find one >.>

you want one? Don't be so sure; they can be a lot of work, and it's not all fun and games...at times they can be a kick in the butt (or maybe bite? ). In all honesty though, they're not the pet for everyone, but if you have the motivation, it can be very rewarding.

Well, before my parents divorced, I worked with dairy cattle for awhile and they can be a pain to be with as well, but like you said, I'm sure foxes can be whole new story. Hey, if I do get the chance, it could be a life experience, who know's. Plus, it's just an idea, I don't know how to get a fox and I don't think I'll be gettin' the chance anyway, oh well. Just post more fox pict.s there really cool .

FoxPMcCloud In reply to arwing3 [2009-01-15 17:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, foxes will be way different than dairy cattle, trust me on that one

You absolutely have to get them when they're young or they'll be little terrors; even then, if they're a dominant/alpha fox, they can still give you problems sometimes...*chuckles* not only that, but they can be kinda moody at times.

Also, depending on where you live can determine if you can keep one as a pet or not; some States are ultra-restrictive, like California...and others are extremely lenient, like Ohio.

A wild animal... as a pet? Not sure I like the idea, but I am amazed you were able to tame him... ^-^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FoxPMcCloud In reply to EternalKitsune [2008-03-24 04:10:52 +0000 UTC]

he wasn't taken from the wild; he was born into captivity and has always been around at least one person for all of his life.

When I purchased him from a breeder I spent countless hours with him, and *that* is why he is so tame.
