well, being that they are magic monster skeletons could be a darn good explanation... but if you want hard science on human anatomy (which shouldn't apply to monsters, anyway...), bones have nerves. if your bone was exposed and your flesh numbed, you'd be able to feel, at least a little bit, someone touching the bone. that's why it still hurts if you're getting a marrow sample taken, even though they have numbing agents injected into your skin. when you fracture a bone, depending on the severity, it's more likely the bone that is hurting than the muscle around it.
