Description M'O Perseverance and Skill competing in the Acorn Stakes at the 2012 Triple Crown Tiara.

"Safe trip, Damien," said Jacob, unclipping the leadrope from Perseverance's bridle. She noticed it without delay, and the usually calm mare pricked her ears forward, eyeing the track as she chewed and slobbered all over the bit. She was collected and together, but the typically observant racer had noticed a change in the air - Damien could have sworn she knew exactly what race she was competing in, and how potentially she could change all her prospects by winning, or even placing. The very way she carried herself told everyone that watched her that she was here for business. Nearby, another bay filly circled the mounting yard with her own jockey, and Damien nodded a hello at her rider. That was M'O Monserrat, the result of a breeding between Madonna and Managhar. It was funny how this little mare would be competing together with her parent's stablemate - small world, indeed. Anna had commented earlier that day: "Even if Monserrat beats us, that speaks volumes for the horses at our stable. She's a nice looking horse, and people will look at her pedigree and think to themselves 'Hm, perhaps I should look into M'Olympa.'" Anna told Damien that if they lost to Monserrat, to not be too concerned. Either way, it was going to be a display of M'Olympa strength and power.

From the infield, spectators had gathered in their stilletos and absurdly short dresses, tottering about on the turf as they watched the horses proceed onto the track. Perseverance cast an eye to them, before shyly tucking away and focusing on the dirt in front of her. She didn't have as much as a personality as some of the other horses - Abbington Boy, for example, who seemed to pose and greet the crowd like a reminiscient Secretariat. Or Alexandra, his mother, whom flattened her ears and swished her tail at anyone that told her she couldn't win. Perseverance, in a way, was much more professional than that. It wasn't in her character to be all showy and proud. She only came to win, to oblige to her rider and to dig deep when it was asked of her. Of course, that kind of personality made her a refreshingly nice type.

Around at the barriers, Perseverance was one of the first to go in, on request of the crew. As expected she stood quietly for the other horses, staring patiently over the padded gates. Damien could hear her breathing heavily, and felt her tense and ready beneathe him - and so he gave her a quick pat, playing with her ears to settle the adrenaline and calm her. A few stalls down a filly tossed and shied into the side of the barrier, sending a terrifying shudder down the metal contraption. Damien sat, waiting for an attempt of Perseverance's reaction, but all she did was toss her head, letting out a mildly irritated snort, as if she was wondering what all the fuss was about. Of course they were all nervous - but that was no reason to act like a two year old.

"All in, they're set - RACING!" came the voice over the loudspeaker, and horse and jockey dipped low as they came out of the barriers, plunging over the dirt. Perseverance jumped poorly, and was in a scrum between two others when she came out, but Damien held her back and let her settle behind the pair, going with them as all the horses found their positions before the final turn. She pulled at the bit, nervous from the clash, and Damien clicked and crooned until she settled to a nice, steady pace. He eyed the front of the group, trying to see Monserrat, but the dirt was flicking into his goggles, and he forced himself to look between the bay mare's ears, and concentrate on his own mount. She had it in her to win - she'd placed second or higher in three out of her five starts, she knew she couldn't turn off when she wanted to, and that her rider's order was the be all and end all. Incredible loyal, Perseverance pulled out all she had to produce a result, and Damien pleaded with God that the skittle at the start of the race wouldn't interfere with a possible victory.
