Code Geass - Tactics[Episode - R2 23]
I have a new 4koma all ready for you. This is the third one based upon Episode 23. I could of just gone on to another image for another episode, but I really liked this joke and wanted to get it done.
It's surprising how long this actually took to finish coloring. More so when you consider that from a technical stand point. I only drew the third panel. The rest was made on computers. I was also trying out some new techniques.
I really like Lelouch's reaction in that panel. C.C. almost had a different line. The previous line was, "You didn't answer her, did you?". I thought this was more funny and playful. I also changed Lelouch's last line. It was just going to be, "Retreat.", but my inner Monty Python got the better of me and I went with a 'Holy Grail' reference.

I hold firm in my belief that it was initially supposed to be "Karen" (a legitimate Western name), but translators continually screwed it up and the dubbers just went with it. Somehow I doubt they were trying to "invent" some new name.
That's just my theory and I'm sticking with it.

Nope, there is official Japanese art from the Sunrise Company that spells her name in English, "Kallen".

I'm aware of that. I'm saying THAT's what I think was screwed up. I mean, would you trust the English of non-native speakers who made S.E.I.T.E.N. stand for a bunch of nonsense technical words?
I don't want to argue with an artist I admire. Obviously you're correct in that the "official" name is indeed "Kallen." This is just a personal preference of mine that makes more sense to me.

Yes. They know what name they want to use. Just because they are Japanese doesn't mean they are stupid.
SEITEN is the perfect example. The series is filled with names of things that only 'sound like' something, but spelled differently.
Regardless of personal preference. If an author or creator makes of a name. That's the character's name.

I just wish they'd stuck with "Karen" in the dub. The double L sounds fine in Japanese, but sounds totally out of place in English. Then again, that happens a LOT in anime.
Call me a linguistic purist, but I just don't think it's worth CORRECTING someone over. I mean, some of the community does still call her that, despite the canon spelling.

Her name is Kallen. Not what someone else wants it to be. If someone else calls her Karen, then they are wrong and are going against the will of the creator.
