Description
I finished the color work. This could very well be my last Code Geass related picture (non commissioned). It all depends on the finale which should be out tomorrow. This is an image of Kallen and Lelouch from Code Geass. The scene was inspired by a very moving scene of episode nineteen. I really didn't get the complete feel for it until I saw it subtitled.
The whole last half of the episode was emotionally powerful. With the finale coming I don't know if this scene was romantic or tragic.
You can see my Scraps album for my design sketches on this piece.
I like this version for the dramatic feel you get from the harsh angle and the foreshadowing.
I don't think I'm going to just see if the viewer can guess at what they are feeling. The expressions are so important in this scene.
I really enjoyed coloring this image. Getting the glow around Lelouch was paramount. I really wanted him to appear in the spot light and Kallen it backlit.
I wanted Lelouch to have an almost dead look in his eyes. He really thought a moment from this he was going to die.
I hope you all enjoy and feel free to post comments.
[SPOILER!!!] I Warned You!
I thought this scene was incredibly romantic. Not that I know if that was Lelouch's intention. That's just the feel I got from it. There she is, ready to die with him. Lelouch again plays the big villain and in doing so is able to save Kallen. Now that I think about it. If Lelouch had wanted to be nasty he could of made it look like he had take Kallen 'hostage'.
The image title, "kimi wo ikirou" comes from Lelouch's last words to Kallen, "Kallen, kimi wo ikirou.". English translation is, "Kallen, you must live on.". If you watch that scene you will see this split second of panic in Kallen's eyes. She suddenly realizes what he's done. I thought about naming the picture, "Live On", but I felt using the original line would hold deeper meaning.
I was surprised by the moment these two had in episode twenty-two that it was what happened in this moment that seemed to get the strongest reaction from Kallen. She asked him why he told her that. I'd like to know that answer too. If he didn't care about her why didn't he just let her walk away without saying anything? Seems like he wanted her alone to know.
Oh, if this series royally messes up Kallen's character I will never forgive it. I think the only way I would be really upset with the ending is if they pair her with Gino.

This was such an emotional episode. It struck me that even though Leleouch was miserable. He still apologized to Kallen. When did he ever apologize to anyone.

This picture took a while to develop, but was well worth it. Lelouch tends to push away the people he loves. That last kiss was a good one.

This scene is amazing and I love Code Geass. Just the fact she realizes the truth of things, that he wants her to live on, that's what makes this scene and so many after it so powerful and so wonderful. Awesome picture FoxxFireArt!

This was really a tragic scene. He was ready to die there and what he thought were his last words were for her.

Thank you. In the end it all made sense why Lelouch pushed Kallen away even after their kiss. He couldn't have her taking the blame for what he had planned.

For the longest time, I was conflicted about the kind of person he was. It was a fantastic way to end the series.

I dunno Foxx, you say you were going for a dead look in his face but he seems pretty sad. That's one thing about the series that gripped me so much, Lelouch had so much heart. He was willing to allow everyone to think he was the villain when all he was trying to do was make sure as many people as possible could see the light of tomorrow and live free. It will anger me to no end why they didn't let Lelouch resolve his relationship with Kallen. The Black Knights were all stupid, could they really not believe in Lelouch? Was it really too hard to understand that he honestly cared about everyone even though he was willing to make sacrifices? I wonder if they will ever release a spin-off of some kind to resolve those little loose ends they left.

It's the eyes. You see very little light in the eyes, despite being in a spotlight.
It was interesting that even though he lies to Kallen to push her away. When she was far enough out of the line of fire he whispered for her to live on. It's almost that he wanted her to understand him if just a little. He could of easily just let her walk off and hate him.

Ah, your right, I see it now. You know it's strange how you really can tell how strong a person is by the light in their eyes. You did a good job at that.
See, this is exactly why I think Lelouch is one of the best characters in fiction ever. I screamed for joy when C.C. showed up out of nowhere and saved him. It was always amazing how quickly he was able to recover when he was cornered and he thought he was done for and act as if he had the whole thing planned. Pure, unequivocal, genius.

Ok. That was an epic part in the anime. I thought it was funny at the part when Lelouch disabled the Damocles when he tricked Deithart by recording a video based on how he calculated Deithart would react. That was smooth.

I did think they sided over Lelouch awfully easy. I thought this moment was rather beautiful. Lelouch was willing to die, but wasn't going to let Kallen go with him. Yet he wanted her to understand him a little in the end.

I think you have a very distinct style. It's less the lean and angular look of the series, but even with a different style, I believe you captured the heartache Kallen feels.
What's so amazing about the title character is his ability to touch so many people, especially all the main ladies^^
I can't say Kallen was my favorite character throughout the series, but I'm glad she was given some happiness at the end.

Not so much. I'm a huge fan of Fred Perry. I pretty much emulate that style for the most part.
I felt that this moment was so tragic. He really thought there was no way out, but wouldn't let her die with him. Yet in that last moment he thought his last words would be to her.
Throughout the whole series it seemed like every time they would come close something would interrupt them.

Ah, I see. I actually have never heard of this artist, so I recently looked him up. Do you prefer American artists?
Lelouch, I think, was a character that was willing to sacrifice personally if it ever came to that end. For his sister, he gave up a "normal" life and chose to destroy the world he had grown up in for the sake of building a new one. And if his dream failed, he hoped that at least he could protect his loved ones from his own fate.
So whether this scene were the result of his natural willingness to sacrifice himself, or his romantic feelings for her, it was still a beautiful moment.
But in terms of pairings, the series really likes to play with the audience, don't you think? They kept a lot of things ambiguous...

FoxxFireArt In reply to mijelly [2009-04-08 07:09:34 +0000 UTC]
I don't really care where the artist comes from. Hell, I didn't even know he was a black man until a few years ago. It all doesn't matter where any artist is from or what they look like.
Needless to say, Lelouch really thought he was going to die in a few moments and wouldn't let her die with him. In the end his last words were to Kallen. He wanted her to at least understand him. It wasn't about C.C. or his sister. Those words were for Kallen to hear.

I apologize if it seemed like I was arguing with you.
In the end though, I enjoy that fact you managed to capture the feel of the moment that moved you enough to pick up a pencil.
And it was probably looking at this that made me feel more sadness than when I actually saw it in the series.

I was crying so much at the finale Personally I don't think that Lelouch lived, just because even though it's sad that makes a much better story. If he lives then it kinda goes against the entire point of his atonement, plus it's easier to deal with poor Kallen's predicament if he's really gone rather than just hanging out with C2

I felt this scene was sweet as well as tragic.
Though I am not a KarenxLelouch fan (I preferred Shirley, actually) I did think this was a really touching moment and I got all wobbley-eyed.
I was glad that she did realize what he was doing, I would have been so sad if she just thought he was the ultimate villain.
Did you see the ending? I just watched it last night, I was bawling like a baby.

I know what you mean. If the Black Knights had not betrayed him they could of had more time together. They were always so close to having a strong romance.
It was so tragic how he breaks her heart to save her life. Once she's safe he whispers his final words to her.
It is nice that she did understand his feelings in the end. Tragic romance. There is a post requiem book that was made that chronicles the lives of the people eight years later. It's only been released in Japan. From what I've been told Kallen stayed away from fighting and kept little contact with anyone in the military and Black Knights as well. She did stay in contact with Milly and Nunnally. She became a doctor.

Thanks.
I don't know if it needed to happen, but I can see what he did.
This scene was so heartbreaking. Giving up his life and saving her. Whispering his final words to her so at least she would know the truth about what he thinks of her.
Even later he has that short meeting with her. they kiss and again he whispers a goodbye to her. It's like he knew he was going to his death, but wanted to see her one last time.
Anyone who doesn't see the romance in that has a heart of coal.
