Description
This is a cake I decorated back in April for my cousin's son, Jack. He wanted a Sponge Bob cake. (I know the date doesn't match up on the picture. My cousin's wife can't seem to program the clock in her camera.)The flavor is German Chocolate cake with a Butter Cream frosting.
Just so you know. You aren't seeing things. That is a 3D cake. The nose, eyes, teeth, and details to the shirt all stand out. It's the first time I've done a 3D cake like this.
I know the picture quality kind of sucks. I forgot my camera so my cousin's wife took the picture. It was months later that I actually got the pictures.
That's the birthday boy holding the cake on the left. I cut him out, because his smile was horrible. You know how some kids can't fake smile. Looks more like they are just showing you their teeth. That's how his smile was.
This week is the newborn Ben's first birthday. They have requested Elmo this time.
In case my newer fans are curious about why I'm decorating cakes. My cousin's eldest daughter has a deadly peanut allergy. So that can't go to normal bakeries. On her birthday a few years back they had to scrap her cake.
I felt so bad for her that I agreed to bake and decorate all their cakes for them. I'm pretty new to this whole decorating thing.

I had to cut off Jack from this picture. It's not that he's not a cute child. He just has a horrible fake smile.

It's not to hard if you know how to carve or sculpt. I think if you could make those sword you could do this.

Yeah. It's just bake the cake and carve. Instead of paint you are using colored icing.
Like this Sponge Bob cake. I baked one sheet cake for the basic Sponge Bob cake. I also baked two round style cakes. Your usual boxed cake mix will make either one sheet cake or two round cakes. I used the a round cakes as extra to carve the nose and make the eyes.

To make different color go to a store that specialized in cake decorating. Just buy store bought icing and buy color gels. use a toothpick and stir it in a tiny bit at a time until you get your colors and remember they always dry a little darker.
Except with Red icing. That takes up so much gel to make bright red. It's better to get a spray coloring. It's what I used on the Spider-man cakes. The the red parts.
A good tip once you have your cakes carved over it in a THIN layer of base icing. Put the cake in the fridge for an hour That will give you a good base coat while icing the final product.

Cool, but how do you make a shape with the cake, like if I were to me a cake shaped into an japanese anime head?

You bake multiple cakes. Stack them to give you your base shape and carve it. That is if you want 3D. Sometimes if I need to just draw on a cake. I will ice the cake and use a toothpick to sketch. I will use a clean damp paintbrush to smooth out the lines I don't want. I will use the sketch lines as a guide to draw with icing.
