Description
Transformers Cake -Flavor: Devil's Food
Layers: x2
Icing: Vanilla
12in.x12in.
This is the cake that I made of my cousin's son, Jack. It was for his fourth birthday. I was told he wanted a chocolate Transformers cake. I kind of shot myself in the foot with the carved Ariel bust I made for his sister Allison. Just doing a plain, flat sheet cake just wouldn't do for my liking. Jack already has enough issues to deal with, being the middle child.
When I first started to make this I had printed out the design to use as a guide in my carving. I had baked two sheet cakes, but I realized that the square shaped design. There would of been so much waste from that design and I wasn't sure there would be enough to serve everyone. At the time I was unsure of how many this cake was required to serve. So I went out and purchased a third sheet cake. I cut my original two in half and used this third to fill in the gap I had created between the original two. That gave me much more of a square base to work from.
Now, It may be hard to tell from this photo, but the dark blue segments that you see on the face are all inset. Those were shallow trenches carved right into the cake. That was time consuming, let me tell you. The top was colored using spray cans that are designed for cake icing. (I used similar sprays to color the Elmo cake and the Spider-man cake. I purchased it from a local cake decorating store.) Since the spray can have adverse effects on colored icing I had to do the spray segment first and then fill in the dark trenches last. While doing this I kept regretting not getting some fondant to do the spray design separate and then placing it on top of the the dark blue icing. It would of been so much faster. I was going to use black in place of this dark blue, but I think the blue meshes far better with the rest of the pattern.
I really should time myself in making these, but I pretty much worked through the night and finished this cake. I would estimate this at about 12-13 hours of work. That doesn't include baking time, by the way. My symmetry is a bit off on the jaw line and the nose segment, but I was carving cake.
Not pictured was a small cake I made with the scraps from when I carved this cake. Made from the segments of the jaw line. I pieced them together and formed a small cake that I put his name on and for them to put the candles in. I was told that Jack loved his little cake so much that he ate it all himself. He ate from that piece for a day or so. Not even allowing his elder sister have any of it. Not that there wasn't cake left over from the piece you see pictured left. I think she just wanted some of his 'special' cake. Interesting how the cake I threw together last minute, due to my dislike for waste, ended up having more drama around it.
My cousin's wife called during the party to thank me for the cake. That was the first time they had ever done that. Usually I was thanked, due to being present; or they would do so when I met with then again for some kind of get together. My cousin also told me this had to be his favorite. There is a nostalgia factor there for the both of us.

It's a style of spray can that is purposefully intended for cake icing.
