Description Commission for ! I was overjoyed when she asked me to draw Jonathan Strange and The Raven King from Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, one of my favorite books.

I thought it would be fun to draw these two doing something together (Strange and his hero!), and the first thing that came to mind was teatime. And since it was a chibi commission, I tried to give their tea something of a whimsical, childlike air.

I added a simple texture in the BG (from ), but everything else is the work of pigment liners.

No crit please--the person who commissioned it liked it, which is the all-important thing.

What a delight to discover all this fanart for this book! It's a shame these two never meet in the book, I like the interaction you drew here so much. The magical details are brilliant, almost a children picture book atmosphere.

Sorry for the late reply, but thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind comment. I'm flattered that you like this--I love your work. I would have liked to see what would happen if Strange had actually managed to meet the Raven King, too--it was fun to envision it in this storybook way.

Isn't that the joy of making fanart, to fill up all those little nagging, unsatisfied holes in your heart? Being able to create your own personal alternative endings, versions, and visualisations sure is a wonderful thing.

I definitely wanted to see more of the Raven King too! But at the same time, I think it was really effective in the narrative, the way she kept us wanting more, only giving brief, tantalizing glimpses of him.

True. I liked the way the Raven King was built up as the centre of the story's background mythology - I really wasn't expecting to meet him in the narrative, and those small glimpses were a nice surprise. More Raven King is always a good thing.

This is TOTALLY adorable! I particularly like the whimsical setting - so many thoughtful, adorable little details! Haha, and The Raven King's expression is pretty great -- I wonder what he makes of dear Mr. Strange? ;3

Perhaps the Raven King is still trying to decide what he thinks of Strange. There's something slightly appraising in his gaze. Strange, of course, is just thrilled to be there! Ha ha, I always love his enthusiasm.

He's really great. I love that last drawing you did of him. Remember how I freaked out when I noticed the Raven in the Prince's face?

Hmm, well, in the book, it's said that the Raven King spirited away beautiful young women and men. Even though that's not the focus of the story, so it's open to interpretation! Regardless, he's definitely not constrained by human morality.

I love that book! Strange how when I saw it i knew what it was, but almost immediately put down the idea as absurd. Nobody has ever read that book. I am now happy I'm not alone in the universe. Thank you
