That's an interesting comment. When you draw an escape fractal without filter routines (as I always do), the colors are established according to the number of iterations required to move the orbit of the variable outside a certain radius on it's way to infinity These bands "level sets" approximate the black set on the same way as the level curves on a map around a mountain.
