Description
I started this one a long time ago and only recently had the time to finish it. It is a relief carving in basswood of a woman in an oriental headdress, a charter named Suki from one of my kids favorite tv shows. I just loved the clean look and had to try it out.The finish is a simple mix of poly, mineral spirits and linseed oil. The mineral spirits thin out the mix to really get pulled into the wood instead of just sitting on top so it looks and feels like there's nothing on it at all but I've used this mix for tables and it really brings out the luster and protects great from spilled drinks, dropped tools and even fighting dogs (found out that one this week).

Thanks a lot. Thinking of doing a little more work on this one, background, built in frame maybe some inlays. Let me know what you think.

Thanks! one of these days I'll get the time to do more to it, inlays or background, maybe just carve a frame into it.

love the carving AND the finish - I am going to give your mix a try - a blog I read from another woodworker says he uses Spar varnish, Boiled Linseed and Mineral Spirits for the same reason (doesn't build up a gummy layer on the wood like Poly but soaks in instead - wipe on wipe off) - very clean carving, - love it!

I've tried the mix with different colored stains instead of the linseed oil also and it still works great, the wood just sucks it in and having the poly literally in the wood grain instead of sitting on top makes it surprisingly hard and dent and stainΒ resistant. To be honest I hate finishing wood projects most of the time because I'm a bit anal about it andΒ I never get it perfect but with this mix it's so simple you can dip it in and just wipe clean and it looks great. Try it out and experiment with it, then let me know how it works for you, I'm alwaysΒ interested in learning something new.

Sounds like my kind of finish - I hate stuff that builds on the outside of the wood - I just want a nice oil finish with maybe some stain.Β I will try your potion! Β What % of components do you use by volume?

It's a simple 1:1:1 ratio. Example 1 cup poly, 1 cup boiled linseed oil and 1 cup mineral spirits.

Nice one ! I love it
Just a note: it will look a lot better if you carve the wood deeper

I had originally meant to. But I just really liked the way it looked now and didn't want to risk ruining it. It's about an inch and a half deep now.
