Description I got a box full of old saw blades at a yard sale a few years ago and figured it was about time I did something fun with them. This is a semi circular step by step of what I'm doing, untouched blades, templates glued in place and cut out. Next comes the final shaping and sharpening.
I'm doing a collection of different batarangs from the current Ben Affleck batman, Christian Bale's batman, batman beyond and even the Arkham video game series, plus others.

These look wicked! I really like how you have included series variations of the batarangs, and the shading on them

Thanks. I'm doing a few other variations not yet pictured, I'm wondering how they'll fly when they are all done.

Neat! I assume they're pretty heavy being made from saw blades, but it would be interesting to see how they fly...

Actually I'm concerned they're to light, when compared the throwing stars or knifes you feel a real difference. They are full sized but they seem a little to light to get good momentum and stick in a target. We'll just have to see.

That's surprising but perhaps it's the saw blade itself. How thick are the blades? The greenish axe with gold blades in my gallery is made from a concrete saw blade so that's my weight reference. Could you add weight somehow?

The blades are very thin but strong, about 1/16" thick. But I melted 2 drill bits trying to drill a single 1/8 hole for the Batman Arkham batarang. I ended up making them larger than my first template when I realized how light they would be so that helps. They are complete now so first pics and then we test.

The concrete saw blade was almost a 1/8" thick, maybe more, and very strong. I broke at least two bits trying to drill them too...the bits were cheap but even then, it was a really strong blade. Too strong for what I used it for but meh...

Guess you'll just have to get used to how they fly

Looking forward to it.
I didn't break two bits,,,, I liquified two expensive bits. The first was a carbon steel bit that I thought was just dull so I switched to a tungsten bit and even using oil it started smoking while I was going slow and easy, then turned red hot and I thought pushed through. When I pulled the bit back I was missing the last inch of it and it had melted into the dent it scratched into the blade. That's when I realized the carbon bit was missing it's tip too.

Hahaha oh...well now that's disappointing!

The bulk of the blades I cut was using a plasma cutter....I think I should have used it to cut the holes too...

If only I could afford a plasma cutter, without the wife castrating me that is.

My uncle got one as a joint gift from us all. It's fantastic...

What did you cut yours with?

Angle grinder, belt sander and files, then came just a smorgasbord of sharpening stones.

Heh well I can't say I use much different on my own. Angle grinder, belt sander, files...no stones though. In my case I just stuck with the files. My uncle, whose tools I was using, wouldn't let me use his fancy sharpening tools...probably for the best lol

I didn't put a super sharp edge on any of them, I just didn't like the rough look on some of the edges left by the tools. Besides do you know how hard it is to pick up the stupid things without cutting yourself when every edge is sharpened? When I took the pics with the dart board I did each batarang and of course I actually cut myself trying to pull them out or get the right angle for the shot even without a razor edge. You pinch the front and back to pull them out carefully but when they slip out of the dart board the sharpened edge you carefully avoided still stabs your hand.

I believe it. In retrospect I'm glad I didn't sharpen mine - the crisp point on the tip of the blades is enough and believe me I've cut myself on them enough times as it is.

They look cool regardless if they're sharpened

OH trust me they are sharp! Just not as sharp as could be, after the first cut I figured that was good enough.

That was my reaction too... Simply being metal means they are already not convention-safe, so I didn't think about the safety aspect for my own handling of the blades. First time I jabbed my finger I was like, Huh, maybe not such a good idea.
