Given the story is sort of a metaphor for the suffering of Job in the bible, this medieval style is very fitting.

As if the crumbling to dust like a pillar of salt wasn't enough of a giveaway...

I have not read the story of Job in full length and I do not remember the entire novel. In generalΒ  suppose pillars of salt would make me think more of Lot than of Job.

One could see a very vague reference there since the wife in the family is the major problem in both stories. The difference is that Lot's wife gets turned into salt for being disobedient but the poor, obese farmer's wife in Lovecrafts story gets liberated from the monster that has taken residence inside of her and survives. The Color from Out of Space does not hold any themes of urban decadence like that of Sodom and Gomorra but then Lovecraft seems to have regarded all poor farmers in the hills of Maine as inherently depraved and sinful in general so perhaps you are right.Β

Lovecraft hated everyone really. And she doesn't survive. She crumbles to dust, just like her husband. I was just making a tangential connection...

Darn, I am mixing them up, indeed. I need to renew my stringency in Lovecaft stories.

It is all about the water. You have to stoke the excess paint and water off the brush so you get just the right layer, took me a while to figure it out. And then, sometimes you just soke the whole thing. Depends on what effect you want.
