have you tried using your flash so the the highlights and shadows are closer?... it makes it a little easier to edit...

i fear and loathe flash hahahha. especially on that camera, because it totally sucks. i think i just don't know how to use it properly, especially when in manual mode. in my photog class in college 6 years ago we spent about 10 minutes on how to sync a flash and i didn't understand any of it. and when i use auto mode for when flash is needed, it just looks so horrible. i'll be going back to that location soon, didn't nearly spend enough time there. i'll have to try some stuff out, or just not go in the afternoon so the sun is on the other side haha

'fear and loathing of flash'... sounds like a movie title... (chuckle)... i wonder if johnny depp would be interested...
what kind of camera do you have?... you should be able to set your flash for a different iso than the camera to get a good fill flash... or you should be able to change the flash power... in either event, that should give even light to balance the sun a bit...

for that i used the minolta z3 that i hate. it's digital. it has no focus light, the flash doesn't pop up, and i don't recall seeing any kind of options for the flash but i'll have to look.

the camera has fill flash... i'd start be using that when you're shooting high contrast images in full sun... it'll help...
and as far as using a focus light... i bet you can open it all the way up... then focus... then stop back down...
just a thought...
