This is my entry for the contest by Check out the journal for contest rules.The girl is from that stock gallery, the ocean is from a picture I took in California, the rocks are from a picture I took in Michigan. Everything else I built from scratch (The mermaid's tail, the moon, the sky, and the wave) Hope you like it!

Lovely mermaid, and I love the combination of painting as well as photomanipulation. Everything looks wonderful together, not like something pasted onto something else! beautiful!

i bow to the competition! it is amazing, and truth be told so eye-catching. i too thought about a mermaid for this contest but i don't think i could have done it half as well as you. bravo! very good work. i love the the cool tones you've used and the overall feel of a midnight glimpse of one of history's most elusive creatures.

usually when i comment i do like to leave a detailed comment because i know how much it means to do know someone took the time to really look at your work. praise is always deserved because you took the time to do the art so of course i give it freely.

Well, based from what I know about waves (absolutely nothing), but the waves do look pretty and pretty unreal and a bit foggy in some areas. Although, I don't suppose mermaids are real too based on science. The waves to me look cartoonishly CG but jeez, that's awesome.
If you're uncomfortable with it, you could always re-edit your entry and re-submit it in. I would think that some areas do need to be (slightly or so) blurred so other more important areas would come into focus.
It looks like you embossed her as well. I'm a bit dazzed but the moonlight's taking on only one side of the mermaid.
The blur affect would work nice on the negative spaces though, say for instance where the moon touches the water. Just a suggestion, you could bring the mermaid more into focus if that is your strongpoint of the piece. Your moon is perfectly done with the all-around glow which seems to be cut off by the lake or ocean. I guess what I'm looking for is a slightly blurred background in a distance so things up close would come more into focus.
