My grandmother told me a long time ago that it was a druid tradition to carve the skulls of their elders (don't know if it is true or not, that's just what she told me). The idea always stuck with me, so when she passed away I did this piece as a memorial to her. It's a bit morbid, I know, but what do you expect from an Irish family?

i'm so sorry! i'm always worried that we aren't understanding each other! i wish i could speak italian!

i always appreciate your wonderful comments, and you support. you always take the time to comment, and i learn so much from your photography. i am grateful that a very talented artist, such as yourself, thinks that i am talented. that means so much to me.

from now on i will write more than 'thanks'. art doesn't worry about speaking the same language, so why should we?

Cool, I didn't know you were Irish. That sure is an interesting tradition though, to carve into the skulls of your elders. Alive or dead? Amazing designs on the skull, we should have had you in our sculpting class. Start practicing, making clay sculptures and you don't really have to carve anything into your ancestors unless you want to. I probably would too if it didn't offend my religion, family, friends... er... probably the whole shabang.

Anyways, about that skull, it looks like it is looking at me. That symbol or marking in the orbis, it's spiraling and tempting me to look away hoping that it disappears. The many bends and dents inward on the skull make it appear as though it belonged to an elder... a really healthy one though. I like this, the designs and knotwork on the skull. I'm still trying to make out what's the character's doing on there. Harvest?

like i said, i don't know if they really did that, i just know that's what she told me. it does seem gruesome, but also very respectful in an odd way, to me anyways, to carve the symbols of that persons life into the symbol of their death. imagine though, having that sitting on your mantlepiece!

i'm of irish descent, but i was born here in the states, i'm third generation. my irish family is pretty morbid, though. we have a funeral parlor in our family and we all already have our coffins picked out! weird, i know. we take death as a part of life, and celebrate the deceased's life instead of morning their death. perhaps this is why this idea appealed so much to me.

i love your reaction to this piece! thanks so much for the comments!

You're welcome.

Wow, I should go look for my coffin too. It is kinda wierd... but it brings a whole new perspective to life. I actually could see that on my mantlepiece... if I have one. I would look at it everyday and probably talk to it . I've been looking vaguely at skulls for a while, it could be a unique approach. Instead of just seeing the skull, you see a more spirtitual side to it and in doing so, you connect mentally and physically.

Like a tattoo on a body full of symbols, you can carve out skulls and enchant them with what you believe belongs to that person. Knowing the person's skull... or person who let you borrow his or her skull, you could engrave them with signs that you believe contribute to their personalities so you would never forget. This is pretty cool. Thanks for showing it.
