Description
Prisma color, original demensions 8X10.The reference photo I used for this is by a photographer named Peggy Kelsey. Quoted from her site [link] : 'The Afgahn Women's Project sent her to Afghanistan in 2003 to photograph and interview women to explore what helped them survive their ordeals.' She took a series of stunning photographs and interviewed these women in a very personal way. This photo is of a women named Tajwar. I immediately fell in love with her wise eyes and knew I had to draw her. Here is a quote from Tajwar's interview with Peggy:
"Just every night for one hour I looked in the mirror, I talked to my reflection, I asked what will I do? I made a plan and every time I put the way to me and I saw that if I go that way, I wil die, I will be finished. If I go in the other way, how will I face it?"
She kind of put my own problems in perspective.
I chose to begin this piece because I really wanted to practice drawing fabric, it is something I've always struggled with, and need to work on. (Any suggestions on fabric? I'd appreciate any pointers you might have.) I chose to finish this piece because Tajwar had such an emotional impact on me, her inner beauty and strong soul were enchanting. I hope I have captured her well. I think I will continue to draw some of the other women in the series, they are all beautiful, strong women.

So far has posted that he'll be illustrating, and has as well. I also think that is also in, but I'm not sure about that one.
It looks as if DA will be well represented. Freaking awesome.

great work!
i know what it's like to feel an overwhelming of emotion while working on a piece. it's happened to me once and only once, but i wish it would happen more often. i've done a lot of stuff that i liked, but none of them have the same attachment or the same impact as that one picture. you can always tell when an artist has a moment like that, and i can definitely see it here. i can't imagine the emotional turmoil you're going through, but i'm happy to see that you've had a chance to let it come out

i'm so glad that you like her! she was an important piece for me, because i discovered that i don't have to do bloody angels and women ripped open in order to find emotional release. it's strange, but beautiful, that i made such a strong connection with a woman who will never know i exsist, but i think that is part of the release i found. thank you so much for your wonderful comment, i really appreciate it.

There is nothing I can say to help you with fabric. This is a very well conceived and executed drawing. The fabric is believable--has weight and form and does not in any way appear artificial.
That being said, I would be remissed in not speaking to the love with which her face was drawn. The delicate wrinkles of wisdom, the blazing life within her eyes.
It is beautiful. It is skillfull. It is a testement to the talent within you.

i am so glad that you said what you said, i did draw her with love. even though i do not know this woman, i felt a real connection with her, maybe it is because of what i am struggling with right now. i did a lot of soul searching while i was working on this piece, and doing portraits is not my usual way of working out emotional problems, (you know me, it's usually bleeding angels and such) but this one was special, this one was a way for me to work it out. her life, her sturggle, her adversity was on her face and i kept thinking of myself much later in life and looking at my own wrinkles and being happy that they're there. a face withouth wrinkles is a face untouched by life and i do want to be touched by life, the good and the bad.

She looks very humble , but holds the expression and aire about her that she has come through alot. V.Insperational picture and very well drawn, the contrast is just right to not drown her facial features out, but still add depth to the fabric... Nicely done.
