Description
This is the full page illustration for 'Dandelions and Razor Blades', the book of poetry soon to be published by Sideshow Press. The poet that I am illustrating is Emily Cooper. Her poetry is beautiful and heartbreaking. What I was trying to express with this idea was the dichotomy between her soft, feminine vulnerabiltiy and her raw, brutal subject matter. She seems to strip herself bare for all to see in her work. That is what inspired this image.
Becuase her work is so emotional and personal, I struggled with what would be appropriate for quite awhile, and at first I tossed this idea aside. But, it kept eating at me, so I decided it must be the right idea.
Hopefully you will think its the right idea too!

I really like it...the true meaning of the piece is so subtle(sp) that whats really going on isn't realized until you take a closer look.
Great piece...

thanks, i wanted it to be a bit subtle, that you had to look closer to see what was going on. not quite my usual gore.

I love how this piece came along, "stripper" who's taking off more than you'd want to see. Amazing details all around (especially the hair and muscles) including the framework.

Hi ya!
how are things?
Very compelling this is... I must the tilte got me at the glance, but in reading your thoughts and trying to understand the poetry, I think this work in a somewhat disturbing way... I can see how this would be difficult for you to do.
Overall I would say yes, thumbs up, but tough to truly comment without reading the prose.
All the best,
T

hi! things are going well, thanks for asking.
this one was tough for me, i really wanted to have a combination of subtlety and raw emotion, which is a difficult combination. her poetry is so personal, she ranges in topics from eating disorders, to cutting, to abandonment, to nostalgia, to love, all over the emotional gamut. so illustrating for her work was a tough challenge. i will have more of the illustrations up soon, and i will let you know when the publishing date is approaching if you are interested in reading her stuff.
sorry it took me so long to get back to you about your comments.
