Description
Canon Digital Rebel XSiTamron 10-24mm
2 stacked images
Season represented: Summer
What an incredible scene this was. A distant supercell updraft, lightning, and the sun setting through the rain. I think my favorite part of this image is actually the area near the vault (that light area to the right of the updraft). Just below that and to the right, you can see some really faint inflow streamers. Pretty crazy stuff! Eastern Colorado has the perfect terrain for chasing, just absolutely flat so you can see for miles. Really makes it tough to give this storm scale, but I'd say it was still nearly 10 miles away. We were pretty far away, but with a view like this, I could care less. It did produce a couple tornadoes earlier in the evening, but we arrived a bit too late to see those. Still an incredible evening with probably the craziest storm I've ever seen
Please tell me what you think!

Thanks! I see what you mean... lighter day on the left, end of the day on the right, with a dark storm to come

Same here, I live in the suburbs, so houses, trees, streetlights... you name it, it's blocking my view

Yeah! We also had a couple other people with us. Seeing a sick storm with 3 other people is certainly better than seeing it alone

Yep.
I chase with 3 other people here. Sure that's better than be alone

As we would say in my native tongue: "Jissim!!"
That is one helluva storm! Still, super-awesome.

I live in South Africa in the Highveld region, and summer thunderstorms can be vicious/violent. But a storm like that, I'd like to see that with my own eyes! How often does storms like that occur, you've mentioned that you chase these storms?

Yeah, these storms don't all occur in the same location. We have to drive hundreds of miles to the right environment where these storms can occur. Usually this happens every couple of weeks in the spring/summer, though sometimes an "outbreak" can provide several days of chasing in a row

1) This is amazing. 10 miles away? That's an immense storm!
2) what does "2 stacked images" mean here?

FramedByNature In reply to Salyan [2010-11-12 22:25:10 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it was insane! Like I said, with such a featureless landscape, it was really tough to give it scale. At this point it was probably between 5 and 10 miles away, just a massive corkscrewing updraft.
~edmund22 's response is essentially correct, I stacked to images to achieve a higher dynamic range. It was a way to compensate for an under-exposed photo. The two images that I stacked both had lightning in them, so there's also double the lightning in a single image

I wish we had storms like that in AZ. We get blizzards in Flagstaff, otherwise, it's just sun and death everywhere. Was it like two images taken one right after the other?

Yeah, they were taken only moments apart

I guess "2 stacked images" means simulating a doubnle exposure. Placing 2 images over each other.
Take a look at [link]
Awesome image BTW!
