Love it! How did you capture that moment? I mean, how did you get the fly to steady?

Thanks! I'm not sure, he must have been sedated somehow. Possibly by the cooler weather?

Another great shot! I have a lame question though . I just purchased the XSi and tried using the reverse lens technique with different focus on the 18-55mm lens I got with it. However, every picture I take is blurred. Do you think you could tell me what I am doing wrong?

Make sure you've got your subject in frame. I had the same problem at first, but then realized that I just wasn't the correct distance from the subject. I suggest setting something (like a coin) on a table, sliding your camera closer and closer to the subject until you can finally make it out and see it in focus

I would say it`s a female greenbottle fly ^^, is it?
We just analyzed their flight habits in the master practices.

Interesting, your gallery is pretty parallel to my own in a lot of subjects for your photos

Man i recently got a reverselenseadapter but how the hack did you get so close to that fly without fearing it away...i mean...with the reverse lense you really gotta get CLOSE...

FramedByNature In reply to HyenArts [2008-10-22 21:32:16 +0000 UTC]
I still need to get myself an adapter. I've just been holding it freehand
I took a while to observe the fly first. Once I realized he was okay with slow movement, I inched my way towards him. So, little by little, I got closer until he was in focus

oh man o.O Get Extenssion rings...they feel better. The lense is not reversed BUT with all 3 rings on you get as close as with the adapter...i bought both and i find the rings for 20$ a lot better. The only thing that sucks is if the lense is too long chances are that the internal flash throws shadows over the lense...lol
I gotta FIND a fly first...

Incredible detail in the eyes I wondered how this might work for you. I really like the DOF in it personally. Nice!

You're welcome I gave that technique a try with miserable results
I might be cruising Ebay for a lens reversing ring myself

Thanks! As long as you've got proper lighting you shouldn't have too many problems with shaking lol I think this time I balanced the camera on a post

Evan, It's a great shot, but the DOF is far too shallow, if you keep doing these throw your camera in manual mode (M) and pick your aperture (around f/8 or f/11) and hold down the DOF PREVIEW button, it's on the front of the camera under the Lens release button. while holding it down take the lens off your camera with your other hand. then use it reverse, this is going to suck because of the decreased light coming in but at least you'll have your depth of field back since you stopped the lens down before hand.
Just some food for thought.
Blake.

Thanks for all the info Blake! It will certainly come in handy
This one was really just to test the detail, so I was looking for some faster shutter speeds. I'll do some experimenting with my aperture next time around
