Description This was a painting I've been wanting to do for a while, when I have been flying I look out the window and imagine what it'd be like to see a giant monster walking across the landscape. Β The idea behind this creature is it comes out of a portal, it doesn't really have a form, it is just a collection of dark energy that has a strong gravitational pull. As it burrows through the Earth, parts of the terrain are ripped up and the creature's body starts forming around the dark energy. Β I wanted it to look like a Lovecraftian monster and took a lot of inspiration from those kinds of monsters and creatures.

a fine concept, and a well rendered one at that! i have quite the soft spot for cosmic horror, this design really hits the nail on the head. the only thing about this piece which isnt living up to its idea, if you dont mind the constructive criticism, is that the sense of scale is a little muddy. i understand that the monster is dwarfing mountains, but the mountains dont really feel like a particular size because theres nothing else to compare them to in scale. that could be a little stream, and those mountains just rocks - i think if you added a civilization, the suggestion of trees, or even just a really diverse and detailed rockface it would be more apparent what size this really is. theres also something about the light around the mountains and river itself, like the sun is going over them too easily - i think if you increased the contrast between the sides of the mountain which have light hitting them and the side that doesnt it would make the mountains more believable/huge looking (thereby making the monster even more massive). i hope this was helpful Β

yea I agree with all of that completely, recently I've been trying to put my creatures in an environment, and it's been a learning curve for me because I normally just render the creature and that's it. Β That all helps a lot, it helps to get a different point of view on it. Β It's difficult to work on something in an isolated bubble because there are things you don't always catch. But I am definitely going to look back at the painting with your suggestions, I had intended to put in a town or trees, but I guess I just forgot haha. That's the thing I love about digital, it's so easy to go back and make modifications where you need to. But I definitely appreciate the feedback!! thank you!

oh i understand completely, my monsters have also just sort of been floating in the ether until recently, environments can be really tricky, especially when theyre interacting with and complementing a subject. i know how it is, after working for hours on end its really hard to look at your piece objectively anymore, a fresh set of eyes can be almost essential. i actually pester people for their opinions when ive been working on a piece for too long, or if im getting close to calling it finished just in case i missed some glaring detail. its funny that you say that too, because ive only ever been brave enough to put backgrounds in on digital pieces because im worried i'll ruin a traditional piece if i try, haha. anytime, i would love to see the updated version when you finish it
