Edward Nygma, also known as the Riddler, is one of the two main antagonists in the 1995 superhero film Batman Forever, the third installment of the Burton/Schumacher Batman film quadrilogy, played by comedy star Jim Carrey (The Mask). He is a criminal genius who seeks revenge on Bruce Wayne for declining to fund his dangerous invention.

When Warner Bros. wanted two villains after Batman Returns, Joel Schumacher chose Tommy Lee Jones' Two-Face as the main villain, while the Batchlers chose The Riddler as the secondary villain, and made both villains of each side of Batman's duality: Two-Face being Batman's enemy and The Riddler being Bruce Wayne's enemy. Joel asked Robin Williams to play The Riddler, with the Batchlers writing it with his comedic delivery. Robin read the script for Batman Forever, he loved it, and he wanted to do it. Due to a salary dispute, Jim was cast.
