Sometimes you get ideas that you just need to let out. This is what happened with that dumb meme the last TV show you watched [+] the last video game you played . Mine was the rather uninteresting Pokémon: The Owl House edition , but @SaltUnknownYT had the much more fascinating combination of Aggretsuko and Chess .
This got my neurons firing. Imagining such a game as an online multiplayer with special abilities. I simply could not stop thinking about it! I just had to set a look for it!
My guiding principle throughout this piece was "recognizability". Each piece had to look "in character", or rather "in world" (hence why everything is modern japanese style), while also looking like the piece they were representing. This is why Washimi's head feathers are styled into a sort of mohawk, why Fenneko wears a checkersplit ebōshi (hat) instead of the more traditional pointy version, or why Tsunoda wears a round pilot helmet: to resemble the knight, bishop, and pawn pieces.
The way the game would work is each character has a certain buff and debuff. Each character can take the role of any piece (and indeed, part of the game is negotiating with your opponent these roles since you can't both have the same ones), but the default is shown here.
- Haida the hyena (King)—
Buff: can perform up to 4 moves when in line-of-sight with Retsuko (for the king, that means horizontally, vertically, or diagonally).
Debuff: such moves won't be be performed until the next turn. - Retsuko the red panda (Queen)—
Buff: being put in check adds to her "rage bar" which, when full, allows her to perform 4 moves in the same turn.
Debuffs: freaks out when she sees one of her pieces get captured, becoming unable to move during the next turn (line of sight for the queen also is horizontal, vertical or diagonal). - Fenneko the fennec (Bishop)—
Buff: Fenneko can use her turn to immobilize an enemy piece through blackmail (for a turn). The player can perform no more moves that turn.
Debuff: If Fenneko is threatening a piece and that piece escapes her grasp, she obsesses over it and can only move in the next turn to threaten that piece again. - Tsunoda the gazelle (Pawn)—
Buff: Once half of all Tsunodas have been captured, Tsunoda gains the ability to use En Passant even when En Passant conditions aren't met. Tsunoda retains this ability even if promoted to another role (if Tsunoda is not playing the role of pawn, promoted pawns count as Tsunodas for the "half of all Tsunodas" threshold).
Debuff: When a Tsunoda gets captured, all other Tsunodas freak out and are unable to move for a turn. - Washimi the secretary bird (Knight)—
Buff: When Retsuko is in check in Washimi's field of view, she can compel the opponent to announce his next move without interfering with her duties (the opponent must lock-in his next move before knowing what you will do; you do not sacrifice your turn to use this ability). Note that a knight's field of view is anything not horizontally, vertically, or diagonally in line with it.
Debuff: When Retsuko is in check, Washimi can only move if it will get Retsuko out of check. - Gori the gorilla (Rook)—
Buff: When Gori moves, she can compel another piece on your team to move in the same turn.
Debuff: If the opponent's rook (or whichever role Gori has taken on) captures a piece and Gori is able to capture an equivalent piece, the only move Gori can perform next turn is capturing that piece (she cannot compel another piece to move when doing this). This is called "Yakisoba".
I've actually already thought of a "sequel" where Ton the pig is the default king, but I've honestly spent way too much time on this as it is.
