Description

"   The year was 183-something. Spring-Heeled Jack is the newest boogieman on the scene!

Where most boogiemen do little more than feed on children's nightmares, Spring-Heeled Jack likes REAL terror. He's crass, he's cruel, he's arrogant, he has all the maturity of a 13-year-old. After he does in a couple other haunts' (and even a few humans) Jack happily takes his place as the one and only "Terror of London".

Cut to 189-something: the penny dreadfuls are wearing out their welcome, one-too many human monsters have taken the public's attention off of phenomena like Jack. With the 20th century looming over him Jack has a lot of catching up to do if he wants to regain his title as cock of the walk 'WHERE EE' SHOULD BEEEE'

Oh yeah also he's a parent now.

His daughter, Ortensia, has kept him busy with that pesky quirk of having to be raised from infancy cause she's part human. Children don't work like boogiemen, but that doesn't stop Jack from trying to make Ortensia into one. Which he will - but ONLY because he needs his title back. If something does come from 'his lil' fireba-I MEAN!-brat, she's gonna have to usurp him the way he did in all his enemies.

So far Otensia seems to be on the right track and serves as Jack's pint-sized partner in crime. Together this creature that looks like a grow man but has all the patience of a child and an actual child get into all sorts of trouble, especially when they cross paths with other British boogiefolk and impatient cryptids the world over.  "

My mock-pitch and poster for my nonexistent Spring-Heeled Jack stories along with all the doodles I could scrounge up from patreon to better help describe Jack, Ortensia, and their relationship.

This series, if it ever were to exist, is NOT FOR CHILDREN.

It's not super lewd or bloody every second but it's more along the lines of The Venture Brothers and Sweeney Todd than it is Disney or my other works. Jack, true to his original "sightings" , is NOT a good person. Even as a woobie single parent he ropes his child into a life of crime and has all the loving tenderness that Fagin has in Oliver Twist (i.e. "Shut up and drink you Gin!"). Oh, and a combination of Jack being the kind of person he is as well as the time period it's set in means it gets politically incorrect. A LOT. And no that's not meant to make it edgy it's meant to show you what kind of people inhabit this world that's inching towards our modern society but has a lot of atrocities on it's way - and the mythical characters and creatures made to shift the blame onto those circumstances. Still, "The Adventures of Spring Heeled Jack and Daughter", if it were ever made into thing, is supposed to be satirical and self-aware to adult cryptid fans. It's the kind of show that I myself would not be writing if it were made - I want people to come away from their deeply problematic and sometimes toxic characters with the same takes and understanding one does to Bojack Horseman.

But sheesh am I no Bojack and ya'll know that....

As such, if you see any art of these two and the other characters that inhabit this fictional universe it's just fun fluff doodles and not gonna be delving into any story. If you do want any extra info on them or want a taste of what the writing would (kinda) be like, here's a written drabble from my tumblr and some art to better explain the two:

If nothing else I definitely love making comics about Jack and O.

Extra unimportant notes:

  • Other characters in this series(?) include Jenny Greenteeth and Nella Longarms , Gef the Ratman , Owlman , Varney the Vampire , Black Shuck , Anne Bolyn's angry ghost, foreign boogiemen such as Schwartzmann, Rawhead Bloodybones , and Baba Yaga , with extra special-non-existent-season-finale-villain El Cucu himself!
  • Heavily inspired by Zombina and the Skeleton's song "Spring Heeled Jack", which is why my Jack has a habit of eating raw living animals.
  • There's a Stephen Universe Future-type sequel series/season that's set in the 1970s when Ortensia is a young boogiewoman trying to make it on her own and Jack is retired. It's there that Ortensia finally meets her mother.
  • Another main influence on these characters is the excellent, demented cryptid/mystery channel "Bedtime Stories" , which has helped introduce me to more cryptids and urban legends.

I SO badly want this to be a series because I would binge watch it over and over. Something about a boogie-parent and his little terror is just so cute and the black comedy is so appealing.

Hah, loved father/daughter stealing strawberries bonding. And Ortensia's little "Are you dead?" reminds me of games my little sister used to play with me... she was an interesting little kid alright. The short scenes of little Ortensia in the tub and her swearing like a sailor were both cute and utterly hilarious. I am already a huge fan of this series and I look forward to see what comes of it.

You should make that an actual cartoon for adults and people 13 and up.

That'd be a nice idea but as I already mentioned in the author's note I don't think I'm ready for

a) big multi-arch stories

b) adult flavored stuff when I'm trying to appeal to children with my main work.

You can do it when you’re ready.
