Diving right into MerMay this year with an illustration featuring a mermaid who requires no introduction, Ariel, accompanied by her sometimes-sidekick, Sora from Kingdom Hearts! Contrary to popular opinion, I liked BOTH of the Atlantica levels in Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 (though my love of all things mer may [π] make me a bit biased). I greatly preferred the adventuring done in the first game, sure, but the singalong levels in the sequel were a fun break from the regular gameplay (except for "A New Day is Dawning"... don't talk to me about that song). I imagine it'd be hard for Sora to learn to dance without any legs, though, don't you think?
On a more serious note, one of the reasons the Atlantica levels were so beloved by me is because they were a big source of validation to me as a little queer kid who was afraid that mermaid stuff was too "girly" for him to enjoy (toxic masculinity hurts, y'all!). Being able to play as a heroic little merman alongside The Little Mermaid herself was a lesson that it's OK to like what you likeβbecause there are plenty of people out there just like you who like it, too! And that's also just another reason why I love MerMay so much... anyone else on board with turning it into a yearlong thing? π

I love the Atlantica levels, contrary to what many KH fans will say about the problematic swimming mechanics and not liking a rhythm based mini game in a Final Fantasy style adventure game. Β Toxic masculinity does indeed hurt, but so does being bullied for being 'too sensitive' and 'not enough of a girl'. Β That's what I went through in middle school, right around the time KH2 came out. Β I remember playing through the Atlantica levels on repeat so my sister and I could compete to see who could get the better score and sing along to all of the songs, including "A New Day is Dawning".

Haven't played the Kingdom Hearts games, spectator sport in my experience, I can't stay mad at either version of Atlantica because both are ambitious in their own ways. As for your little backstory, that's lame you got treated like that. I'm grateful that my parents and siblings didn't make fun of me for liking these kind of things.Β Merfolks are cool. And I'm straight.

I didn't like most of the original songs in KH2's Atlantica. But I did enjoy Ursula's song, and wish it was in the musical...

I liked those levels, too. (The songs were kinda cringeworthy, though.) I had the hots for Ariel back then and Sora looked cute as a merman. (I sometimes even ship them!) Also...does this count as a subtle Rick Roll?
