Hey I want to draw a badge for myself too. How do you know how big to make them/aspect ratio? How does it even work?

Badges can be made in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, but a good size to shoot for would be about as big as a 3 x 5 inch index card.
Most art programs give you the option to choose the size of a new image in units other than pixels (inches in this case). Also when creating a new image, make sure you set the dpi to at least 300, so you get a crisp high quality picture when it prints.
This badge is going to be printed on card stock in 3 x 4 inches and laminated. Most office supply stores can do it for pretty cheap.
