Next mermaid picture!What if mermaids exists? Would they just clean our messes up?
Imaging, people go into your house, trashing it and nobody wants to help you, no police, no-one. You can't fight against those people, if you leave them alone then they won't hurt you. The house gets messier, you can't leave it or you die. The only thing what you can do to live “normally“ in that house is clean up their messes.

I can imagine them tossing it all onto popular beaches during the nights, to let the humans at least deal with some of their own mess. Maybe sneak up on boats to toss it there too.
After all, not many places to properly dispose of gathered ocean trash, gotta get it back on land somehow.

I would do the same
Or gather it all in one huge growing floating island, they then drag around the ocean to keep gather garbage on. Not caring if they risk crashing into boats. At least that might create some awareness to the problem.
