Description My take on one of Galvatron's lieutenants. Here i made him a "she" since i feel that the body type of the character and the name suits more to a female mecha rather than a male. I know that most of you prefer the classic version of the character but this is just a friendly intent with no malice, only artistic creativity. I also modified her alternate mode.

lol this is awesome. I actually quite like the way some turn all the bots and cons into fems... even though technically megatron makes a pretty ugly fem if not done right lol

Megatron and Optimus Prime weren't meant to be female bots because if you look at their physiques, they both have big shoulders and chest, kinda like a superhero frame. So in that sense, it looks off if you do the gender bend on both Optimus and Megs. On the other hand, the Seekers and Coneheads have sleeker and aerodynamic frames, since they need to be able to fly fast and cut thru the wind drag and G force. That sleek and sexy designs plays up interesting design possibilities, depending on the character and if you could pull it off.

And besides, the way Chris Latta did the dub on Starscream, he sounds like an screaming effeminate backstabber, so i just played up Starscream's attributes into my overall design. Thundercracker needed a slight upgrade so that he would be noticeable and not just the second banana, simple minded loyal Decepticon grunt that he's been portrayed in the classic series. Now for Skywarp, i don't want the character to be just cool just because it's colors are evil and dark. I wanted to do something to make it unique, give it an edge. So i was thinking of how to make Skywarp different then i remembered Crusher from the Challenge Of The Gobots 80's series so i decided, hey why not. I figured that the Cons could use a Deceptibitch in their ranks. lol And Arcee would finally have a rival. So there you go.

So if you want a character to pin the blame on Scourge and Skywarp's rather effeminate design, then blame the black race car Renegade with the bitchy voice, red lipstick and eye shadow. lol

Well, i have to. There are so many Transformers designs out there, both here in DA and in other sites and art forums that you do want to make your own mark. There's a fine line between giving your design a modern interpretation but still paying homage to the spirit and personality of the character concepts. And that's what so hard for me in terms of the creative process. You want to make each character fun, noticeable and interesting while still not lose or discard/disregard the original source. Some do work while some don't. An example is Blur. Even though i tried to gave him a cool and modern makeover, fans can't seem to like and dig the character. On the other hand, original concept characters like Vanquish Prime, Sentinel Prime, Detour and Torque have been accepted by my DA watchers so i'm really quite happy with the overall response and again i'd like to say thanks to you guys for digging my art style, even if it's not digital.

The Transformers gender bend designs by greenwild are cool and that's what so great about Transformers. You can play and style them any way you want, as long as you stay true to the classic elements of the franchise. That's why we have these various animated series of Transformers, The Beast War series, Aramada, Cybertron, Power Core, Victory, Animated, Prime, the Michael Bayverse and the IDW comicbooks and videogames. It's like the Gundam toyline, as long as there's Optimus Prime and Megatron in a TF series, you can't go wrong. In the Gundamverse, as long as there's that staple white Gundam in your series and some cool and modern mobile suit designs and the philosophy between warring factions is there, then you've done your part.

I could have tried the TF gender bend route myself but i'm an old school TF fanboy at heart and i will risk the ire of G1 fans if i did so thankfully i decided otherwise.

hey im all into the hand done stuff. I love seeing people still drawing and making beautiful art by hand, cause thats making the art an extention of yourself. your putting a part of yourself into it and it reflects that part of your personality. digital is taking over a bit too much. im not saying im against it cause it does give some people a chance to be creative and express themselves in a way that they cant when doing by hand or if they dont have the talent or means to do it by hand. Doing it digitally gives you an extremely wide range of things to play with and to find your own style.

But im glad to have found someone ells who does it by hand. Take legendary car conceptualist and restorer chip foose. he does all his designs by hand and doesnt use any tools to assist him other than the pens/pencils he uses to draw with. i look up to him so much. His designs are so amazing and modern, and at the same time he stays true to the memory/personality of the car. You do the same with transformers. And your right. It IS hard to come up with your own original designs while still staying true to the look and feel of the series of transformers your design is directed at.Β

I have recently taken up the 'prime' style. Specifically i was trying to recreate a somewhat already established(in my mind XD) character of mine. Raven. When thinking of this name you kind of get a bit of a dark feeling from it. or at least i hope so. I used to depict her as kind of a person that would rather want to fade into the background, but her personality is just so strong/different from what an autobot should be that it just makes her stand out more. I did a sketch for her as a seeker(shes always been a seeker actually ), going for that thin sleek look that starscream portrayed. Seeing as he was the most effeminate source i could use as reference to approach in this style cause the only other seekers were those large blocky-ish twins skyquake and dreadwing. definitely want to stay away from them unless you are going for the butch look like with strika in the animated series.

If you want you can take a look in my gallery and tell me what you think of raven and if i have missed anything important in the style. i like hearing someone else's opinion cause it gives me a new perspective and encourages me to keep going. i also have a colour version of her in my favorites in the 'my commissions' folder. It was rather a surprise too. seeing as i forgot to tell the person that she has gold eyes and they got it right just by guessing, how freaky is that?

And i think a lot of fans dont like blur, so its not to say your art thats at fault. blur was depicted as a rather very annoying character and its hard to warm up to him. but i like him. he kind of reminds me of a goofy hyperactive kid. You just want to find out where his stash of sweets are XD

Its so rare to find someone i can go into detail with about transformers so much. This is a real treat for me to talk to you and i mean it :3.Β

I actually fell in love with the Armada version of starscream and then went back to g1 and fell in love with him and the rest of his designs onward. i guess you just need one different perspective of someone to start to like them

I do like Chip Foose as well. I'm not a car expert nor do i know how to drive but watching Discovery Turbo and Transformers kinda ignited my love for machines. He's a great illustrator and i like his minimalistic two tone style because he adheres to the tradition and character of the vehicles that he redesigns while making it cool and modern. It's nice to go over the top with ghost paint, wicked flame graphics, bones and skulls but it's not my thing. Some people dig LOUD but not me. I prefer quiet yet BADASS.

I'm an old school traditionalist when it comes to art. I do want to try dabbling with digital art and mixed media but i feel that a lot of people nowadays do their art digitally that doing old school art is now a rarity. Nothing against people using tablets and painting softwares to do art but i feel that if you can draw your ideas in pencil and paper then shifting towards digital art is easy, since you already know how to draw and compose your subject the old fashioned way. I think that's the flaw of those who do art directly into a tablet as against to those who can "sketch" their ideas and compositions on paper. It doesn't matter what tools you use, what's important is your creativity, passion and the overall finished product.

I have taken a look at your Raven and she really looks like the Teen Titans version. I take it that you love superhero comicbooks and the Young Justice animated series?

Here's my take with your Raven character: If you want to make her distinctly different from the DC Teen Titans version, it depends on where you want to take her visually. I suggest that you study characters with wings like Marvel Comics' Darkhawk character and make them look like blades that transform and fold into her cloak and cape. The Silverhawks is another 80's cartoon series that you should look at, since you want her to look mecha and metallic. Also, try using the Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets anime series as a visual template in terms of the wings, costume and the bird design helmets. You could take design cues from them.

I've found a pic that you did in your gallery, i think it's called my adopted proto form. It has a nice design that you could use as a base design for Raven:artemisdragonheart.deviantart.… Also, i gave a name for your proto form seeker character.

If you want to make her look more like this badass queen dominatrix Β then try drawing Evil Lyn of He-Man into a female bot. Her seductive evil sorceress look would go well with Raven, since she is the daughter of Trigon in the comicbooks. That and look into similar character types in World Of Warcraft and other RPG's and medieval fanatasy anime and movies. Whatever you decide depends on what your VISION for your character is.

And i think Black Arachnia of Animated is the closest that i could think of visual wise for your Raven character but let's do try to make it NOT look like her okay? We want her to be DIFFERENT.

So that's that. Feel free to ask.

P.S. i find it rather amusing and interesting that a number of my DA watchers are fangirls. Hmmmmm.........

....................... O.o'''

LOL!!

You looked at the wrong image of raven! XD

Thats my oooooold version (first version in fact) of her. Sorry my bad, i didnt specify which folder to look in Β

Hehe yes i kind of based her off of raven from teen titans. That drawing of her was done 4 years ago. But now that i reflect on her personality shes actually even more quiet than Teen Titans raven. Kind of like snake-eyes from GI Joe.Β

She only ever bothers to speak when she feels her input is absolutely necessary or if the situation is very serious, she trains by herself and specializes in martial arts and computer hacking (soundwave influence here). I kind of pictured her with those ninja throwing knives. and shes supposed to have an angular visor over her eyes. Like g1 jazz.

I redrew her in transformers prime style already. and im guessing you didnt look in my fav gallery under commissions >w<

This is raven TF Prime: artemisdragonheart.deviantart.…

Link to color commission done by : forgottenhope547.deviantart.co…

(personally i try to stay away from using animated Black Arachnia as any kind of reference unless im specifically doing an animated character. but i would take little from her other than shape and being a female *shrugs*)

Thanks so much for your advice i really appreciate it. I can take from this to use on other characters i have that are female and evil. heh. Specifically i have created a counterpart for megatron. or tried to.. Yes i have had difficulty finding a female figure and style for a empress/warlordess type personality. I have a general feel and image in my head on how she should look like but putting it onto paper is usually the hard part if you dont have a point on which to start. My name for her is tigress, but perhaps as her design comes together over time i could change her name to suit her a bit better

And yes thats exactly why i love Chip Foose as well. He doesnt just ad something that is pretty onto a car, he takes a medium and uses it to highlight the beauty of the CAR itself. ^^

What you say is true, its getting harder and harder to find artists that do work purely by hand. It almost feels like its becoming a dying art, which i hope im wrong.

Ohhhhh heh no i didnt draw that protoform. thats why it says ADOPTED

i bought it for a few points from someone. I still have to add the outer plating and draw the face for what he would look like after. thats why there are two images. the one on the right is going to be the completed image

Sorry that i didn't look out at all your folders in your DA gallery. My bad.Β

Evil-Lyn of He-Man is really a good template for badass evil sorceress queen dominatrix types since she has this exotic looking headpiece and a very seductive looking costume to boot. I feel that with the way she was designed then and the 2003 animated version, all you have to do is draw her as a bot and tweak her design so that it won't be a literal copy. You can come up with more than five different characters using her as a template. Really.

If you're picturing her as a bot with visor on her eyes, why not model her after Scott Summers AKA Cyclops? He has this very macho and machine look to him due to his optic visors. Either that or maybe Gendou Ikari from the Rebuild Evangelion 3.0. He sports a Star Trek Geordi La Forge type of visor in that movie.

Or perhaps you could look at my Arcee design. She has those throwing knifes and she uses daggers or kunai. Combine my Arcee with my Slipstream design and you would probably have your Raven character. Then add my Skywarp's colors to your character and there you go.

But i checked out the colored version and it seems that you already have your character. Maybe a few design tweaks to make it pop more and look stronger, design wise. Also, add a bit of evil color gloss, for that POP that i was mentioning.

Tigress reminds me of the DC Young Justice character maybe name her not after an animal. Same with Raven. Find names or words that don't sound like superhero or supervillain names. And never name a Transformer character after an animal, if you're not doing Beast Wars type of designs. That's the only gripe i can think of regarding your character, the name. Most Transformers characters have names based on cars like Cliffjumper, Windcharger or Sideswipe and there's a very good reason for that.

frederickofolympus In reply to Idigoddpairings [2012-10-30 06:32:07 +0000 UTC]

I got into a lot of heat regarding the gender thing with both Skywarp and Scourge. I was a fan of the Hannah Barbara animated show in the 80's called Challenge Of The Gobots (Google it up so you'll know) and one of the characters in that show was a female bad guy/gal called Crusher where her alternate mode was a black formula one race car. She was a very bitchy Renegade and i wanted to incorporate that attitude in both Skywarp and Scourge, since the classic version were bumbling idiots like you've said, who were more or less grunts for Megatron.

Some fans think that i've ruined the character by making her female but i think otherwise. It's a perosnal and artistic choice on my part and i'm sticking to that.
