Dressing up is fun, especially when you get the rare chance to dress up in gorgeous regency period dresses. Going out in such dresses is surprisingly nervewrecking. Sophia whiped her sweaty hands on her skirt as she walked through the castle grounds to her first destination.
Everyone and everything looked so gorgeous that she felt a bit out of place despite being properly dressed for the occasion.
She looked next to her to her beautiful bay mare, who was clearly enthousiastic about the whole ordeal and as always; slightly impatient. Sophia chuckled as she petted the mare on the neck. ‘Already enjoying ourselves are we?’ She spoke softly, ‘have I already told you we are doing something new today?’.

In a rare moment of impulsivity the woman had not only entered them into the dressage competition, but also into the halter class. It had been the chance at the Diamond title that had lured her in. Her poor brain, filled with fantasy and romance by the recently fully binged series ‘Brigeton’, had not been able the resist the opportunity of being a part of the glitter and glamour.

Only now, minutes away from her turn to show and looking at the participants before her, did it occure to Sophia that she had never participated in a halter class before…

It can’t be that hard though can’t it? She thought to herself. She knows how to walk with her horse and Ollie is a proud mare that doesn’t need much help to show of her gaits and posture!
Her energetic self and forward tendency will surely be as positive for a halter class as it is for a ridden class right? Wrong.

The halt never was the bay mare’s favorite thing, and Sophia soon found that she had quite a bit more control from the saddle then from the ground. But never mind that, nobody is perfect. Their walk definitely saved the show! Ollies walk looked powerfull and expressive, with big even steps. And Sophia, with her long legs, managed to make keeping up with that look almost relaxed.
It reminded the woman why she preferred being in the saddle over a nice walk together…

The trot is where it went wrong. You see the extended trot is Ollies favorite exercise and she will offer to show it off whenever possible. What better moment then now, in front of this adoring crowd, with a handler already struggling to keep up? The mare tested the waters first, raising and curling her neck and slowly extending her pace. Sophia fastened her steps and gave a little nudge on the leadrope asking her horse to slow down, but the enthousiastic mare just curled her neck more and kept going.
It was truely a great trot! Strong, expressive a joy to look at. Just not a joy to be running next to. Definitely easier to ride…
Next time we show at liberty, Sophia thought to herself as her arm started to grow sore from trying to keep the 700kg animal to not run off.

Suddenly she felt a pang of pain in her ankle, forcing her to quite abruptly end the trot and pull her mare back into a walk. Probably not the neatest transition, but everytime she put her weight on her right ankle it hurt like hell. They finished their turn as Sophia tried to hide her limp.
She hoped the pain would fade fast as in two hours they would have to ride their dressage kür.
This was a bad idea, the woman thought as she looked at the perked ears and shining eyes of her four-legged companion. At least one of them had fun…
