And another one.The coloring and flat values are very messy, but I like it for some reason.

A nice character design. I like the balance of her tattoos (maybe henna?), interesting shawl and shirt, and the plain-ness of her pants.

Awesome work! I've been trying to get a silhouette like that working for clothing shape (loose-hanging top and tight pants) but it hasn't been coming out right. You make clothing design look effortless though. If you don't mind spilling some secrets, how do you usually come up with a color palette? Are you making it up on the fly or using references or what?

I personally want to edit the top a bit, because I think the sleeve looks awkward. But, as far as the loose-hanging top goes, you just have to remember that there's a body under there and do whatever you can to hint at the form with folds and values.
With clothes, I just look at a lot of images on the net and take mental notes. I also like injecting a touch of culture in to characters for texture, whether it's made up or not. Sometimes I'll use references for clothing ideas if I want to know how something is usually worn or to find variations of a design. Mostly, I just draw what appeals to me. I don't like keeping one consistent texture or pattern over a single character, so that's usually how I end up mixing and matching stuff in to a design.
As far as colors, it's all experimental. I really like the ones I came up with for Raz, but it's mostly just me looking for a pallet that pops without too much of one thing in particular, whether it be brightness, color, saturation, etc. I don't like drawing characters with overly hot tones, or overly cold, even if it has to do with the design. Sorry if any of this sounds confusing. It's kind of a stream of conscious explanation because otherwise I'll spend too much time. haha

That's cool, I could see how overthinking the colors defeats the whole process. Your color balance on these characters usually feels "hot"to me, but it's all nicely muted. It reminds me of the desert, which is what drew me to your designs in the first place.

Yeah, I've been told that before. It's usually the result of extra tone layers added during the final touches for the sake of cohesiveness. In that area i do lean towards hot rather than cold for the most part which is why i shoot for balance in the base colors. I was obsessed with the desert for a while and it kind of just stuck with me. haha

The way you do clothes, is something I really admire. She's part of the project right? How is it coming along?

Thanks, man. I like drawing clothes. And Dirty, the project that she's in has been put on hold for a while which is why i haven't really been drawing any of the characters from it. I just couldn't work the plot out and need to approach it with a fresh mind later.

Unique and engaging character. Is there some South Asian influence on the design? Very cool outfit.
