no prob. i gave you a pretty simple rundown, but here's an article if you want more info. everything i know about photography pretty much is from Ken Rockwell's website. If you have the time, read all his stuff, it's gold.

This is a fantastic shot!
I had one question. I am slowly discovering my Nikon D70s and I was curious... how do you manage to capture a photo like this, using a high shutter speed, without using flash? My camera is so odd and every time I pump up the shutter speed, if I don't use flash, the photo turns out completely black. It's really aggravating. Your camera is obviously much better so you may not have this problem but if you do know anything that may help me, I would be much obliged. I have tried everything; even bumping up ISO but, when I do this, the noise of my photos turn out so bad that it really isn't worth it.
Thank you in advance!

We have very similar cameras. High shutter speeds can only be used with a flash or in bright light. If you notice, this was directly into the sun, that's why I was able, and actually had to use such a fast shutter speed. You can also open your aperture (lower f-stop) but be aware this gives you a more narrow depth of field. If you are getting dark photos with fast shutter speeds, there's not enough light. If you're just getting used to manual settings. Take pictures in the automatic setting and see what the camera chooses. This will give you a sense of shutter speed/light. One last thing, don't forget about ISO (sensitivity to light). If you want you can crank up the ISO and use faster shutter speeds with less light, but this can add noise (graininess) to your photos. HA, sorry this explanation is so long but it should answer all your questions.

Thank you so much. I just went outside and experimented a little with the shutter speed and direct lighting and yes, I discovered that. I am slowly getting used to manual so it's a work in progress. Thank you again for your help!

Wow, that's a great shot. It's majestic and energetic. I think the tall composition definitely adds to that. Also, the inclusion of the ground emphasizes the upwardness. Pretty awesome. =]

Nice snap Any filters on, like a ND or ND grad to get both the sky and the ground ?
