yeah.. so :iconmarueeneileen: was nagging over her shadingskillz, so i tried to help her a lil bit.. soo here comes the explanation XD
on the left i have the shading and the black shit, nooow;
Black; it's important to think about volume when you shade! so try to think of every thing as this, and smack some lines on to really draw the volume, feel the volume BE the volume! so you don't shade things flat! it can be a nice exercise to lay a piece of tracing paper or the kind of paper you wrap your food in.. see-trough paper indeed. and draw these lines, or make a new layer ~ XD on the right side you see iv'e used three different colors! blue, red/the colors of the drawing and yellow.
we'll start with the colors of the drawing/red. it's to show volume, cus as the thing curve some parts fall in shadown, as you see mine is smooth (in you H&K progress you can use, like, if the base is orange, you can take two different orange color (more and more reddish) and so red to make it look like it was smooth.. or you can make it hard, just remember to follow the fooorms!
the blue one is cast shadow! it's in shadow because an object is blocking the light, as the hair or the rim of the hat. i draw my castshadows hard edged, and plz.. do so XD they're almost always hard edged! (just look at the scribble under her, it's her casting a shadow on the snow)
the yellow is the most annoying, reflected light! light bounces from an object to another, so sometimes it lights up the shadowside too, like, the light hits the snow, and the snow cast lights back up on Eileen. this is a spiffy, but not necessary detail c:

just ask me if it's something you dun understand.. and i just smashed on some colors real fast to show the basics. AND DETERMINE THE LIGHTSOURCE!!! important, and be consistent.. you can see that i break that rule a lot.. and it looks weird.. yes.. and i was to lazy to add highlights..
