“Hey, isn’t she that girl?” a man whispered and pointed at you. “The one who fought two titans alone?”

The person next to him nodded. “Yes, that’s her! _________ _________!”

“I wonder how she’s still alive? I mean, two titans at once!” one said. “What happened to them?” the other asked. “Dunno… I don’t know the details… Some people said they’re dead… other said that she got too scared and ran away and they lost sight of her…”

“Of course she ran away! She’s a little girl! There’s no way she killed them! She’s just very lucky that she’s still alive!”

“Mhm, yeah… But I must say she has guts, man! It’s not everybody who goes fight two titans barehanded!”

“You’re right… I wonder what’s going on inside her mind?...”

You stopped listening. It was no use paying attention to others conversation in order to distract yourself, once all they talked was about you. How they knew all that? No idea. You didn’t remember what happened at all. In one second you were running and in the other… everything went black. When you got to yourself those two giants were dead, lying on the ground.

Closing your eyes, you rested your head back. You were safe inside the boat, yet you didn’t feel like it. Your parents died and you didn’t have a clue of what was going on. Plus you swore revenge. That’s right. You’d kill all of them. All those monsters.

The anger you felt was a good thing: it helped you to momentarily forget what happened. Yet you couldn’t help but start crying again. You were alone in this world now. There wasn’t anyone who would take care of you nor give you some place called ‘home’. Your father and mother wouldn’t come anymore to give you a good night kiss, or shout at you when you did something wrong. They were gone. Forever gone.

You started to cry convulsively, hiding you head between your knees. ‘I’m afraid… Why isn’t anyone here with me?’ you thought, and tried to stop the tears. You didn’t want to cry, but it wouldn’t stop. Some people actually looked over at you, but none of them came to console you. Not that you expected it, but you weren’t used of crying and not being hugged by someone. Your father would always find you and hug you tight, telling you not to cry. You missed it. Maybe you were raised as a spoiled brat?

You shook your head. No. Your parents were just lovely people.

You quietly wiped the tears away. You shouldn’t cry anymore, you already did it enough. After all, you were their daughter. With this, a small, almost unnoticeable smile came to your face. ‘I’ll show them, I’ll make Mama and Papa really proud of me. I won’t be a crybaby anymore. I’ll find somewhere to go and I’ll learn all about those things. And then I’m going to exterminate all that giants. One by one.’

You slept for a while and happily you didn’t dream. When you woke up, the boat was already arriving Wall Rose, and some of the hundred people who managed to save themselves were now leaning over the bow and watching as they came always nearer to somewhere safer. You stood where you were, taking a look around. Two boats managed to get out of Wall Maria, each of them bringing more or less 110 people, who were scared and exhausted from what they saw and witnessed with horror. There were soldiers, normal adults, kids and also little babies. All of them shaking with fear.

A few meters from you were three kids, also alone. One of them was a boy with blond hair, and light blue eyes, the other two had black/brownish hair: the girl with deep black eyes and the boy green ones. None of them seemed to have an adult by their side, yet they were together. The three of them had shocked expressions, but at least they were together.

You glanced away. You were determined not to feel lonely nor cry. You didn’t need anyone.

That’s right. You’d be fine alone.

“We’re there!!! Thanks God, we’re saved!!” one person screamed, and jumped out of the boat. The others did the same, feeling safe once they touched the solid ground. You stood up and followed the others examples, but as you were to jump off, your foot slipped and you fell with your knees on the pavement. ‘Ouch!’ you thought and bit your lower lip, preventing any sound to come out. Your hand and your left knee were bleeding a little but nothing too much.

“Here, stand up” a voice said, right in front of you. It was a boy, probably two or three years older than you, who was wearing a soldier uniform. He held his hand in front of him, so that you could take it. You accepted his help and stood up, murmuring a low ‘thank you’. The boy nodded and walked away, without saying anything more.

For some reason you kept staring at him. At his back he wore a cape, which showed a symbol you knew very well, and which you had always admired: the Wings of Freedom. So he was from the Scouting Legion, huh? To think that a little boy like him was already a soldier…

Yet he was the only person that talked to you until now, the only one who came with the intention to help. ‘I wished there were more people like him…’ you unconsciously thought.

The Scouting Legion… You knew just a little about them, since your parents almost never talked about this kind of stuff, but you heard a lot of things from them. They were the branch of the Military, most actively involved in Titan combat and human expansion and even though they had little to no success, they were known as “the hope of mankind”. At the time you heard those things, you hadn’t a clue of what it was, but know you were starting to get it.

Looking up at the gray sky, you tried to understand why exactly were you the only one completely confused about what was going on. Everybody else seemed to at least know of what they were afraid of. All of them seemed to know that those giant creatures were titans. Your parents didn’t look surprised at all, either – it was as if they knew that those things existed. Why were you the only one who didn’t knew it? Why didn’t they tell you?

You felt as if you were left behind by everyone.

How should you survive if you didn’t know anything?! How…?

‘PROMISE ME YOU’LL SURVIVE,__________!!’

You went wide eyed. Yeah. You had to survive. No matter how. It was your father’s last wish. Moreover, there were things you needed to exterminate.

‘FIND A WAY TO KILL THOSE TITANS!!’

You would.

Despite the fact that you didn’t had somewhere to go, that you were alone and that you didn’t know anything, you’d do it. You’d train hard: you’d become stronger and faster, you’d learn more about them and then you’d go after them. You would make them regret everything they made.

With a deep inhale you nodded to yourself. You had decided: you would join the Scouting Legion. You’d be a woman which people would look up to and be proud of, just like you looked up to that boy you had just met.

You’d be known as mankind’s new hope.
