(Japan's copy of the M1 Garand)
As the war in the Pacific raged on, the Japanese realized that the Americans may posses a much better rifle then that of the Imperial forces. With U.S M1 Garands laying around the battlefield, the Japanese brought some back to the main island where they were tested, evaluated and were deemed a good enough rifle to reproduce domestically.
Originally designed for the Japanese navel paratroopers these guns were produced surprsingly by the navy, the rifle weighed in at 5.4 kg and was gas operated with a muzzle velocity of 740 m/s.
Unlike the M1 Garand which carried 8 bullets in a en bloc clip, the Type-4 held 10 rounds with using 2 of the standard 5 round stripper clips of other Japanese rifles, this means that when the last shot was fired, there would be no distinct M1 ejection noise, which knowing how Japanese forces acted, it is easy to guess how devastating that little design change would have been.
it`s range without scopes was a surprising 1200m and if this rifle was used in the field it is easy to imagine how effective it may have been but much like most late war Japanese weapons, the Type-4 rifle was never able to shine, especially with only 250 rifles produced by the end of the war, it never could have shown any kind of changes unless the military leadership was more eager for mass production and for quick introduction. The rifles were produced at the Yokosuka naval arsenal in Kanagawa prefecture and Washino machineses in the city of Anjo in the Aichi prefecture.
Due to the fact that these rifles came late in the war, they are often times also called the Type-5 rifles but due to the fact that the rifle was first proposed in 1943 and had most of it7s production in late 44 it is probably accurate to call this the Type-4 more then the Type-5.
In the simulated pacific war aka L.T.S.No.5, one of the first decition was the evaluation of the battlefield and the equipment the imperial military had, and when it came to fire arms, it was decided that a lot of changes were needed and the first being the mass introduction of submachine gun and the second being the introduction of semiautomatic rifles.
It was realized that the Japanese method of one shot one kill was hampering the units effectivness, having more rounds shot towards the enemy poved more effective and thus the military tried to improve and improve fast.
This of course was nearly impossible for units fighting at the front line thus the top needed to focuse on newly made units or units that are possible to be supplied and trained in a quick manner.
On the later, the first candidate was the Iwojima defenders aka the 109th Division and their naval units. One of the first batch of resupply was for motorization and rearmament. As part of the rearmament, a lot of new experimental weapons were delivered such as the recoilless rifles, the new drum magazines for the Type-92 HMG and of course the Type-4 rifle.
The manual for the rifle said that this rifle was most likely reliable in a enviroment of supporting/covering fire of the main attack. Those who fired the guns, loved how it worked but hated how you needed to reload, since it needed two clips and fumbling them would be life or death.
As a result, those on Iwo-jima started making a new twin-clip just for the Type-4 which they sent to the mainland, which became the standard by February of 1945. On Iwo-jima, only 150 rifles were sent at first, most of themse were used as sniper rifles for killing enemy COs and other free targets for harassment runs.
Which was effective as much as their holders were, thus those who carried this rifle were marksmen.
The rifle would start getting produced a lot and was shipped to the Chinese, Burma and the island of New Guinea. By the end of the simulation nearly 1,500,000 rifles were made.
