Here's a sketch that I submitted as a scrap that I colored. It's just a practice run in using varied but controlled colors. I tried staying away from white or grey and instead used very light or washed out primary and secondary colors. Anyway, it was a fun exercise.Let me know whatcha think.

I really like your choice in using washed out colors. It gives it a lot of mood. You should draw more of these.

Not too fond of the background gradient, but the rest works very well.

Actually, I'd have to agree with you. It doesn't really suit me either...
I wasn't sure what color to fill the background, or even if it needed it, but I think I'll change it.
