I could totally see this working as a side-scroller, like you would move side-to-side to get to the islands that are horizontal on the grid, but to go north you'd move into the background and south you've more towards the foreground.
I remember a game kinda working like that, but I can't remember what it was called...

I think this would actually work out quite nicely if Nintendo decides to do this besides I never got to play this awesome game due to not having a gamecube. But of course nice work i can imagine the time spent on this.
Oh personally i wouldnt do sidescrolling for Wind Waker maybe top-down and similar to Minish Cap?

I can promise you this was mine. It was featured on Kotaku a few days ago and 8Bit artist did a painting based on it awhile ago, and I have also posted it on my PixelJoint.
