I really love Gosalyn from the show, I adore her positive outlook and her tomboyish ways.
And I realise it is a cartoon, a light-hearted cartoon, so they'd avoid heavier themes such as the whole 'no parent, no grandpa'-theme.
The pilot episode where she was looking at a photo of her grandpa was so sweet and endearing; so here is more of that.

A very appropriate drawing considering what just happened:

Well, seeing as this was drawn like... years ago, not a coincidence, for sure.

But yeah, incredibly sad news, nonetheless

I find the idea that Gos would pull out pictures -- whatever she still might have - of her family, particularly her Grandfather who I always had the impression was the one who mainly raised her, to be entirely appropriate. Like you said, I get why they'd avoid it in the series proper, but characteristically speaking it seems very right to me. And you capture that so well here. Also - I love whatever it is you did to colour this. Really keen looking.

Textures, textures and more texture
Thanks, Gos being a bit more... emotional makes more sense for me, but I also love how they really didn't display it in the show; for me, it makes her such a private character, at least with her feelings and I think that is so in her character to be such as.

Beautiful, so very sweet and sad at the same time. This element of the show is something I only really learned to appreciate now that I am older - this connection between Drake and Gosalyn who bond over their temperaments as much as their losses.

True that; I could not have said it better myself.

Oh, this is really touching, and you drew Gosalyn soooo cute here. Makes one just want to cuddle her in your lap and tell her it's okay to cry.

I liked that about the first episode too. (It wasn't actually the pilot, though; I forget which one the pilot was, except that most of the clips from the theme song were from the actual pilot episode.)

I'm pretty sure the first hour-long episode also worked as the pilot (mainly).
Either way thanks

You know, now I am completely confused. I have no idea. Either way, the hour long eppy with Taurus Bulba ("Darkly Dawns..") was awesome, one of my alltime favourites.

And, you're welcome. The image really just struck me. So simple, yet very powerful. Gotta be her eyes, just excellent job there.

Awww, lovely. Actually it always kinda annoyed me that she never mentions her grandfather again. It wouldn't have to be moody, just y'know something like 'oh my grandpa taught me to do this' or 'hey these were my grandpa's favorite cookies' or...y'know whatever. *shrugs*

I absolutely agree - unfortunately that somewhat the standards with shows (both tv and cartoons) that each episode doesn't necessarily have to have any connection with the others, which is a shame. I love continuance.

masterfedora In reply to FrothingLizard [2012-03-20 16:16:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I do too. I always liked the moments where it would reference the fact she's adopted. It only happened like three times in the show but it was something. Eh, what can you do? Negative continuity rules supreme.

Her expression could transport so many thoughts.. wich she's probably debating with now. This is also one of the reason I especially like Gosalyn, that despite beeing stubborn and adventurous, there's still a heavy past hidding behind her Lovely work here

(and they did touch upon it with Nega-Goz, but since that wasn't a continuing character they could go darker)

Aaaw - thank you for the gut-punch of sweet and sad. Again - I love the way you've begun colouring, it's so soft and textured and wonderful.

I have plans to sing the lullaby (that part often moves me) for my own kids. It's very sweet and easy to remember.

Nice, this rendering style has a vibrant yet artistic and slightly rusticated feel to it. Glad you drew Gosalyn thinking back on her Grandpa. Too bad they didn't emphasize her relationship with her biological family more, it really would have brought out the deep human elements of the show.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

FrothingLizard In reply to IndyHorizon [2012-03-02 15:24:27 +0000 UTC]

So true that - it would have given it more depth; but on the other hand, I feel that with most cartoons. I love when they go into details with backgrounds-stories and especially family-relations.

IndyHorizon In reply to FrothingLizard [2012-03-02 15:32:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's what I like about most Disney cartoon series. Well, the good ones back in the 80's and 90's that they hardly ever show now. :/ They were always able to reach out to people and allow viewers to empathize with the characters. Hopefully the series I'm working on can do the same.
