Yeah, I'm an uber nerd. I know this and have embraced it.But... I just think it's so funny! Like in one version I read, and it was basically "Venus was bored so she told Cupid to go shoot Hades, because that would be entertaining."
Mythology can be boat loads of fun, if you have borderline mental issues.

Hey, I read that version! This is basically what I pictured, too. Fave'd! <33

Thank you! It was a pretty ridiculous idea, but I really couldn't get the mental images out of my head once I read that business. It was just set up too easily for me to not take advantage of it. But what a rough situation... just no winning for anybody involved haha.

I like to think that everything ended happily, that Hades made amends for kidnapping his bride (which isn't the nicest thing to do even if you are hopelessly in love) and Persephone forgave him and understood that he trully cares for her. It's certainly less depressing that version in which Persephone forever stays trapped in a loveless marriage and Hades himself is miserable, because she doesn't love him

That is how I like to think of it as well. There are some accounts of it that way, so I prefer to focus on those ones rather than the unhappy ones. Why not pick something that turns out well for those involved?

Ahh pluto is always fun. I guess since no one is really afraid to 'speak the name of the god of death lest he sweep you away' or any cultural roadblocks we can all love him as the little emo that he is.
...What Persephone was doing walking around where Pluto could see her so easy is probably her own secret.

Indeed he is. XD It definitely is a plus that we can just enjoy his little stories and stuff without the fear that something unfortunate will happen...
Weeeeeell... it is pretty hard to figure out how to make a really simple /lazy/ comic and have it make sense that she would just wander by. But maybe those little flower frolics are pretty crazy... one never knows.

The thing I find kinda irritating about things like this is that the romans had a different set of names from the greeks for the same people and people mix them up while talking about two gods at once.
eg, Hades and Venus.
No offense, i liked your work but there should be consistency. either Pluto and Venus or Hades and Aphrodite.

Frotu In reply to TenDrunkMonks [2009-01-19 05:46:29 +0000 UTC]
I definitely am aware of the different sets of names used by the Romans and the Greeks -- I've even been tested over them in courses before.
I'd like to justify my use of names in this one, though. In my head, it will always be "Hades" because that's how I was introduced to his myths. Frankly, I don't care enough about the rest to prefer one name over the other. Thus the fact that the idea for this comic came while reading Roman myths lead me to use the Roman names.
Anyway, that hopefully shouldn't happen in the future (since when do I have time to read now? XD), but if it does, feel free to cyber smack me.

*Smack*
Consider yourself punished.
But on the topic...
I was just trying to say that a lot of people are ignorant about the fact that there are two sets of names for those gods and mix and match willy nilly. But as long as you know that and are just flaunting your abuse of convention, I'm fine with that.

Well I'm glad I can get a bit of a pass on this one. I felt that I had a pretty (ridiculous) legit explanation, anyway...
I know what you mean, though. I'm not exactly sure why, but one of my teachers in high school gave everybody a codename from Greek or Roman mythology that our grades were posted under... anyway, I remember hearing some guy go "Aaw, I got Jupiter. I really wanted to be Zeus or whoever it was that was like the king one." Suffice to say that I got a good laugh out of that.

Well, considering that he was an economics teacher, there is a decent likelihood that he wouldn't know the difference, either. He just chose gods/goddesses because there are a lot of them, so it was easy for each person to have a unique name...

oh poor Hades, it is rather funny from this perspective. And I do agree this version is much better than that abomination Disney created.
Though I find it slightly creepy in the versions where she is his niece...all that inbreeding may explain a lot about Greek myths...
On a completely unrelated note, I think I promised to stalk you a while back, and never got around to it as the Internet company kept upping the rates, and me and the husband were afraid they would request our souls next.
As we've now found a soul-friendly company...back to the original stalking plan

Ugh. I try to not even remember that Disney made a version. That just took the names and then f-ed everything else up. *not bitter about that one or anything*
Ooo, soul-friendly is definitely the way to go. Especially when it allows stalking. *sage nod*

I know! He's the only one that doesn't go out of his way to make mortal lives miserable and he's the only one anyone is scared of! I mean, did anyone even ever build a temple for Hades? And he's also the only Greek God who didn't cheat on his wife... well... 'cept for that time with Minthe but Persephone turned her into a mint plant before they actually did anything so that doesn't count. And... albeit he didn't exactly have much opportunity when he has to spend nearly all his time in the Underworld...
I'm just gunna stop talking.

Frotu In reply to Dracawyn [2008-04-01 02:48:35 +0000 UTC]
Yes, he treats everybody the same, which is nice. I do believe that there is one temple for him... but I think that there is only the one. And, actually, the thing with Minthe came about once the Romans stole all the mythology. In the original Greek stuff, he was completely faithful to him. It makes me want to squeeesh him for being awesome. XD I don't even know the sources I have for things anymore, but I know that there were a few lines he said in some of the myths that were just... kinda awesome. I'll have to go look for them... sometime...
And you definitely don't have to stop rambling about Hades if you don't want to. He is teh yey. ^_^

Yeah... I believe it was a book that I read it in. Either Edith Hamilton (I believe... been a couple years since I read it) or the books by Robert Graves. I'm thinking the former, though. I really hate to rely on memory, though... mine really is quite poor.

I have no idea where I started getting interested in mythology, but I remember reading the section in the almanac about it. XD I also took latin in school, so I felt super ahead of everybody in that department. Not to mention that it made the test ridiculously easy.
So, since you know about mythology, I have to ask if the Disney Hercules movie drives you up the wall. Because when we watched it in class, I was very distraught. *laughs*

Frotu In reply to KayBlueEyes [2008-02-03 02:34:05 +0000 UTC]
I've had issues with Disney lately... it just seems like the quality has been going down the chutes. And I really HATE the fact that they keep making sequels for EVERYTHING... it just seems lazy to be trying to cash in on their past sucesses and not come up with anything new. The last movie I can remember enjoying was Mulan, and I think that came out when I was in like... 4th or 5th grade. O_O
*end rant*
I believe that I liked the Hercules movie the first time I saw it, before I knew any mythology at all. Seemed very sensible then. Once I learned stuff, it just miffed me. I can understand turning Hades into the bad guy, since that does seem logical, but just the volume of other things that are completely wrong causes a bunch of painful facepalms. Which, granted, can be a bit amusing...

PsychoPyro813 In reply to Frotu [2008-02-14 14:49:54 +0000 UTC]
Like the fact that...Hera wasn't his mother and drove him insane...twice? Or the fact that Hercules was born with godlike strength? Or the fact that Hades had very little to do with the whole story except for when hercules had to capture Cerberus for one of his first 7 tasks? Yeah. The disney movie got it all wrong. But if you temporarlily forget all the real mythos, it's still enjoyable.

Hahaha, oh maaan, yes. And I love that Zeus is all loving father and not a man slut or anything, too. Personal fav thar. *laughs*
Still, if they had wanted to play with mythology, they could have found other stories that would have fit in with their requirements. Psyche and Eros comes to mind... fluffy little romance with eventual happy end and everything. Would have required very little tweaking, really.

Ugh, I can't believe I forgot to comment on this like a week ago. *facepalm* Anyway, I love it, and it certainly elicited quite a few giggles from me. Also, random time to say this, but I can't wait until I get home in four days (WHOOOOP!!) so I can show Kirby (my younger brother who I'm really close to and watches SPN with me [and has grown a bit addicted himself]) your latest stuff! Since he loves LotR and PotO and pretty much everything else we both do, he definitely appreciates your work! He really likes the funny pictures.
Also QUITE random, and I don't know why I'm saying this here: I was talking with my roommate (and now good friend) Andrea in the wee hours of this past morning, and we were talking about going to this place called the Potato Shack (which serves VERY large baked potatoes with like a gillion different toppings) right off campus, because I've never been there and she loves it. ANYway, she was like, "They're REALLY big," and I said, "Well, how big is that? I've never seen a big potato before, I guess," and then she indicated this HUGE size, like, almost a foot long (after which my eyes grew quite large and I said, "Are you SERIOUS??" because the biggest I've seen was like 7 inches long). So then she said, "Well, haven't you ever seen potatoes from, like, um..." and then, thinking of you, and being generally ignorant in this conversation, I was like, "Um, Idaho?" and, after staring at me for a few seconds, she said, "Well, I was gonna say Jason's Deli." So yeah, we laughed, and I felt like an idiot. This really is so stupid, and I don't know why I'm telling you, 'cause it's more the "you had to be there" funny, but it just amused me that I had a facepalm moment solely from automatically connecting the image of big potatoes to you/Idaho. Just one of the those great benefits of our friendship, I guess! *laughs*
