Kayo is defensive and cautious around most people. She can be rather blunt and won’t bat an eyelash at putting people in awkward situations. She is competitive, which gets her into a bit of trouble during probending matches. She works hard in order to survive in the class striated Republic City, but has a natural tendency to laze around and eat pork buns on the couch. She prides honesty in herself as well as in others.

Looks:

Before joining the Fire Ferrets, Kayo was mainly dressed in civilian clothes that did not reveal her waterbending abilities. After joining, she began to dress more to show her bending background. She has medium tan skin and dark hair. Her build is on the smaller side, being shorter than most pro benders.

Background:

Kayo’s mother and father immigrated from the southern water tribe and the earth kingdom respectively. Her mother is a waterbender and her father is an earth kingdom civilian. She grew up in the smaller towns on the out skirts of Republic City. She was trained mainly be her mother in the art of healing, and by her father in Hung Gar martial arts. Although her father is not a bender, Kayo was able to combine the earth kingdom style he taught her with her waterbending. Her mother opposed Kayo’s learning of offensive attack, but her training will be useful when she moves to Republic City.

Anti-bending sentiments grew gradually in her small town and reached its peak when Kayo was 14. Riots began to occur periodically, and on one occasion Kayo’s mother was critically wounded. Kayo’s parents forced her to move to Republic City in hopes that the city the Avatar Aang created would be safer for their daughter. However, after reaching Republic City, Kayo realized the Equalist organization could not be escaped. For the next three years she lived disguised as a non-bender, traumatized by the events in her home town. She worked as an apprentice to a clock maker in order to carve a living off the streets.

Her clock maker employer left his small store to her along with the giant amount of debt he owed the Triple Threat Triads. In order to pay off the debt, she joins the probending annual tryouts only to be disqualified after using ice spears. Down on her luck, Kayo was outside the probending arena when Bolin, impressed by her mixed style of bending, invites her to join the fire ferrets. “We’re already against the odds anyway! What’s one more?”

Fighting Style

Kayo natural style incorporates a lot of ice, but is forced to refrain from doing so due to the fact that it’s banned in pro-bending. She has been called out multiple times in her initial matches for using ice, and has gotten on Mako’s bad side because of it. Her style showcases many strong earthbending stances and she is more of a power based fighter. Her agility is rather weak but she uses her short stature to aid in dodging.

Relationship with Mako

Mako is quickly rebuffed by Kayo’s blunt comments and her inviting herself to spend nights on his couch. They have a grudgingly amiable relationship and work well in the arena together. However, Kayo’s competitiveness to attack first tends to ruin Mako’s strategies. Their one common interest is cooking, and they often share dinner duty.

Relationship with Bolin

Bolin’s friendly open nature forced Kayo to really bond with the entire team. Kayo loves to tease him just to see his comical facial reactions. Even so, Bolin’s warm personality eases Kayo’s defensive walls and she enjoys visiting restaurants with him when they have time off from probending. They both enjoy dressing up Pabu in nonsensical costumes and scheme together on teaching him new tricks. Due to their similar fighting style, Kayo and Bolin are able to perform strong power hitting combo attacks.
