Description
Something for my Syrian Civil War collection. A former Iraqi military M113 APC (donated by the United States for New Iraqi Army), now put into service with ISIS militants. This one's based on a few vehicles. The colour scheme's actually taken from a vehicle in Yemen, meanwhile the symbols and slogans have appeared on M113s in Syria. The pintle mounted gun's been replaced by an old Soviet ZPU-1 AA gun (with added gun shield). Its all built from an Empress Miniatures 1/50th scale M113 kit.

I just thought it would stand out more than just another BMP-1. If I could source a pickup truck or Humvee with an interior then I'd make one of the group's WWII looking APCs, but with everything, its on the "to do" list and that's already full too many times over (as I sit building a tank for Star Wars currently...).

Its this fictinal SPAA I came up for my story where IS forces made, its basically a BMP body with a AA turret, which the design was inspired by the flackpanzer-V Coelian.

I wouldn't say that such a complicate mount would be necessary. Even in State armies.
Here's an example used by a proper military force. Similar conversions by the Russians and Ukrainians (based on the BMD and MT-LB chassis) have been even less advanced.

There has of course been many ZU-23-2 mounted on BMP-1/2 by non-state actors. In these case they tend to not be as developed - just bolting the mount on top of a plated over turret ring (rather than modifiying the gun to sit within the ring itself). Here's some examples of ZU-23-2 with enclosed mounts.

In practice the ZU-23-2 is used more as a direct fire weapon for long ranged fire support than in its anti-aircraft role. Which is one of the reasons why many technicals don't have that much armour - besides the typically light chassis they're based on. Vehicles armed with Zu-23-2 are used in urban environments, however even in those cases State forces don't bother with much more than a forward facing gun shield.
I wouldn't go so far as to make something with quite so much thought into it as your one. That's perhaps outside of the bounds of the sort of equipment these Non-State actors are using. Though a corroded metal covering over the mount with a similar purpose wouldn't be much work to do. The thing is with the current Zu-23-2 I have - which yes is going to be stuck onto a BMP-1, there's maybe too much detail to go covering it all up. I'd be better off making a set of barrels and a mount, then creating the fighting compartment from scratch in that case. Which may be in more line for something like this:

Oh wow this is an awesome comment! XD I love the details your telling me plus the pictures! and I understand, its okay. Yeah it would be difficult to cover the entire thing ^^" Especially since its a detailed model, i would not wanna do that too.
And there are two things i would like to point out since you were very detailed :3 first is the main gun being 37mm not 23mm, and the reason why its so complex is basically trying to make the vehicle take all kind so of targets, it has raidar and a number of high tech equipment.
You said this was outside the bound of these Non-state actors, i agree and thats actually the reason why i designed it that way XD its a small way to show that the Daesh forces in my story are more organized as a government, they have uniforms, facilities and funding, its also a precursor to a more advanced weapon I have in mind for the Daesh to use in the story. :3
Thank you for the details and it gave me some new ideas ^^ itd be awesome if we could talk some more!
