Description
Well here's the Fallout 4 style Vault elevator style entrance finished. Not looking too bad in my opinion. We'll see if the Vault 111 one is unique to just that Vault, or this elevator is used more than once in the game (I wouldn't think its unique, notably though I obscured the number of the Vault on the gear, but it does say 67- the Vault that all my Vaulters come from).Models for scale are a Protectron (made by Brother Vinni) that I converted a bit to resemble the ones from The Pitt DLC for Fallout 3, and a Vault Dweller made from a Wargames Factory survivor. Both are 28mm scale and the elevator as a whole measures 13 inches across (which isn't exactly the right size, rather it should be 20 inches, but anything larger and I couldn't fit it in the storage box that I use).

Woah! Did you JUST do this, like after the conference was done?

There's a thread here (and another on the Lead Adventure forum) where I post up my shit and talk about what's happening next if that's your thing. The stuff I throw up on DeviantArt's just whatever's not too dodgy looking.

I started it after the initial trailer was released. June 8th or something. I ran out of clay pretty quickly so had to wait a few days till the 13th to finish it, and IIRC the conference was on the 14th. So in actuality it took about three days on and off to work on. Its a pretty simple design so I didn't really need to give it any more time than the usual crap that I churn out.

Damn my memory. I guess they did show the disc of the vault door in that thing. So you had time. What materiel did you use? I mean, I do my best with flat surfaces, can't imagine sculpting etc etc, 3D mediums of art. I honestly wish I had the money to commission someone to do 12" man and woman, but if I had that kind of money I could just take life classes.

That thing's just a plasticard base (the crap people use for advertising signs in their car windows), with foam for the central circle to give it a bit more height and them a load of milliput clay on top of that for all the details. As the original design is fairly simple it didn't take much to replicate it, just the time it takes to sit there smoothing out the clay all day. It could be better and more accurate of course, but I doubt anyone's going to nitpick the details at all (though if you sat there combing the screenshots like I did the discrepancies are a little obvious).
I use milliput for most of my larger builds, either for details or just where I don't want the surface to be too plain. Its good for blocking in large areas, however its not good at all for finer details (in which case other clays like greenstuff do, though even that's still crap, I just use it because like milliput its easy to get a hold of). Its the same stuff that I used for the cologne bottle ...ah, bust of a pre-war industrialist that I made ages ago (I have a giant decapitated stone bust of Lenin too in a constant WIP state for my Chernobyl stuff too).

Though aye, when the clay's cheap enough its really just a case of sitting there and working at it to improve yourself. I mean I'm still crap at it, but if you have the time you'll eventually get better. Heh, yeah you could commission someone to do that piece for you, or instead spend a year or two sitting there learning how to do it at home (and then churn out more stuff yourself too). If you do want to get into sculpting I'd say start it as a hobby, even if its baby steps, then when you think you've managed the ground works then go for classes. However plenty of miniature sculptors are self taught, so its rather a case of just spending the time to improve yourself (however basic a design you start out with).
Heh, though I could waffle on forever about this crap.
