Description
The king of the machines, and conqueror of the Mushroom Kingdom, Smithy was the final boss in Super Mario RPG on the Super NES.After shattering the Star Road, Smithy sent his legions of machines to gather the Star Pieces. But he was opposed by an unlikely team of heroes, including a hammer-wielding plumber, a princess, an evil turtle king, a cloud who thought he was a frog, and a spirit of the Star Road embodied in a toy doll.
During the final battle in the epicentre of his cavernous factory, Smithy transformed his giant head into a range of deadly guises in an effort to defeat the heroes, but his efforts were not enough, and his illegitimate reign was brought to an end.

Smithy is arguably THE greatest Mario villain of them all! I also like when he takes on his nightmarish shape-shifting form when you fight him in round two of "Super Mario RPG". You did an outstanding job with the design for his original form here and perfectly captured his menacing personality!

They should put him in another game as a boss,
or even remake mario rpg. that is still one of my favorite mario games!
For some reason he reminds me of santa

An evil Santa made of anvils and hate?!
I'd love to see a well-done remake of the game. Maybe with more care taken over the enemy names this time...

Did you know this song is used in a youtube video, a remixed version of Smithy's First Boss theme?
IT'S THAT EPIC! XD

True, itΒ΄s a shame how there isnΒ΄t any fanart and even no oofficial art for good old (or bad old) Smithy. Luckyly for us, there are DA fellows like you who show the world the awesomeness of those not-so-known characters. Nice job on the drawing too, you really caught SmithyΒ΄s look and persona on the pic.

Thank you. I've been looking at some of Mario RPG's other villains too. I particularly like the duo of Valentina and Dodo. Given that most of the boss fights are against weapon-themed characters, having this wacky duo of a busty, drinking diva (with a parrot on her head) and her bumbling, fat lackey is quite surprising.
I may continue with the SMRPG love. Many people forget about them when Square and Nintendo parted ways.

I've sketched Smithy before, but I don't think it was until this time that I realised he had chains for arms and little feet hidden underneath. A lot of the Mario RPG villains are like that. I always figured Mack was just a decorated living sword - I'd never noticed it was a little dude riding the sword like a pogo stick until recently. Now Mack's choice of allies makes a lot more sense.
And this is why I hope Square really is remaking the game

Oh, some great Smithy art here! I always found it stupid that we haven't been given ANY info about him in-game just until the moment we met him. He has the potential to be a much deeper and memorable villain, had the game expanded on his backstory.

fryguy64 In reply to Artemendo [2008-08-06 07:46:13 +0000 UTC]
Aye, but I fear that would have detracted from the starring roles of many of the other characters. Not knowing who you're going up against until the very last second actually made the game feel more like an adventure through the Mushroom Kingdom rather than a mission to bring down a tyrant.
I may be doing more art of characters from the game shortly

Miyamoto has gone on record saying he doesn't like there being a clear "good" and "evil", but that his villains are usually just misdirected (I suppose he packed this in for Ganondorf, who is just pure evil).
I'm not sure where Smithy falls. Maybe he IS just a machine doing a job (collecting Stars). Or maybe he is truly a malicious monster - something alien to the Mushroom Kingdom...

Well, with worst Mario enemy ever, I was actually refering to the worst/least creative/ugliest desing for a last boss in a Mario game, especially one from a game like SMRPG wich has characters who just ozees with personality (Boster, Croco, Punchinello, to name a few) finding what Smithy really looked like was a HUUUGE disapointment for me (irst he looks like a cliched king, then he looks like a stove).
Of course, this days there are even worst desings for Mario Last Bosses like the Millenium Star in MP3,udy the clown or that thing at the end of Super Paper Mario (wich I would also give the award of most evil Mario enemy to date)

Beau-Skunk In reply to FlintofMother3 [2008-08-07 06:48:32 +0000 UTC]
I admit, Smithy's design was a bit odd, but he did have the "nasty bad guy" look down at, least.
I liked Rudy the clown personally. (Villain of Wario Land 3, and Dr. Mario 64.) I liked how the horns on his head looked like musical horns. Though he did look wierd without arms.
I think the Shadow Queen would qualify as the evilest/darkest Mario enemy for me. She came off as really creepy & dark to me.

Smithy was always one of my favourites but he never got the characterisation he deserved since he only appeared right at the end of the game.
You'll notice that every other Mario RPG has had the final boss (PM2 being the slight exception) appear throughout the game so as to give a better insight into what they're like.
Personally I'd love to see a remake of SMRPG (I had to play a ROM of the original because I'm sure you're aware we peons in Blighty never got a release) in the familiar epic Square style.

Aye, I had to play the ROM as well. The magazines raved about SMRPG for months before the plug was pulled. I was so gutted about that!
There was talk of a remake a while back. I don't remember if it was established as a wild rumour or actually happening. I'd be very happy to see it remade with 3D character models and everything! Sprites didn't do some of those baddies justice!
