You know, I just realized something. When Yakone had kids, both if them turned out to be water benders. If the mother was a non-bender, that means his bending could still exist; in the form of DNA. If Amon truly wanted to rid the world of bending, he would have to commit genocide on anyone who even has the possibility of possessing the genes for bending-dormant or not-which could mean killing off just about everyone in the world.

I think the bending gene must be ultra-dominant, because it can randomly appear even generations after the last bender in the family tree died.

The metalbending thing came up in an alternate scene I'm working on where the Wolfbats and Fire Ferrets are trying to figure out what to do if the finals are attacked. Ming and Bolin are annoyed that neither of them can metalbend since that means they're both stuck with a limited number of discs if attacked while Shazou and Mako can make fire and Tahno and Korra have a huge pool to work with.
